Actually this is really directed at future potential users who visit this page. There are NO viruses and there is NO adware or spyware or malware of any kind. The people who posted stuff like that are simply clued out; this post is to help future visitors stay clued IN.
Unfortunately, software companies nowadays use what some might judge to be less than honorable methods to get their products onto your system. This is nothing new, although it's probably more prevalent now than a few years ago.
So here's how to make sure you wind up installing this program and ONLY this program, on your system. I just installed it myself, saw all the things others have yapped about, uninstalled it, and am about to reinstall it one step at a time while I write this, in an effort to make sure I don't forget something. ANYONE can see what I saw and am going to write about, and ANYONE can install this successfully, and without knowing any "tricks" or having any prior knowledge — if I can do it anyone can — but it DOES require one thing I'm sure a lot of the people below didn't do: R-E-A-D. Follow this and you'll see what I mean; if you find you sometimes get things you don't want installed along with whatever main program you're installing, this post will cure that, not just for this one program, for anything and everything you can get from C|NET (and any other *reliable* site too).
* * * * * *
1. DO NOT use the green "Download Now" link. How's that for a start?! That's the first thing. C|NET is full of good people but they have bills to pay like anyone else, and this site is free to you and me, so they will understandably promote certain things while you use their services, same as a television program airs commercials during the broadcast. The green download button is C|NET's own — it is a small executable (NOT the main program) that does a bit of business, then downloads the installer after. If you want to skip that first part, look right under the green download button... see where it says "Direct Download Link"? That's a direct link to the main program. I'm not letting the cat out of the bag here, and C|NET doesn't mind my telling you this. How do I know that? Because they themselves are the ones who put that direct link under their own download button, and they do it WITH EVERY PROGRAM ON THEIR SITE.
But can you use the green button and still not get other stuff installed? OF COURSE. No kidding. Just LOOK and SCROLL whatever's scrollable and READ and, in general, turn OFF the autopilot and PAY ATTENTION to what you're doing. Uncheck anything that's checked and that you don't want. That's all there is to it.
Now that that elephant in the room is out of the way, I'll go through the rest of the steps the same way, meaning looking, scrolling, and generally just paying attention when installing stuff.
2. You've clicked the direct link... you have the install executable on your desktop (or wherever)... now run it. The next steps are choosing the language, hitting "Next" at the "Welcome to..." screen, SCROLLING DOWN the license agreement (in case there's something at the bottom you need to uncheck... there isn't), and clicking "I agree" to that agreement.
3. "Choose Components" screen... see the first line, "Type of inst"? Change "Recommended" to "Custom". SCROLL DOWN... whoop, what's this?!... UNCHECK "Grid Network (Pandora Service)" (are we learning yet?!). Note that ALL of the "Type of inst" choices leave that last box checked except the Custom install. This isn't C|NET incidentally... C|NET was just the first step. Everything after is part of the main program.
After you UNCHECK "Grid Network (Pandora Service)" click "Next", then click "Install".
4. Aha! More fun stuff. And this page is REALLY fun ;) What's the first thing you see after installation is complete? "Install the KMP Toolbar". Want it? If not, UNCHECK the "Install the KMP Toolbar" line. But what's this? When I uncheck that line, the check on the line just below that ("Set and keep Ask.com as my browser home page...", etc.), which I was ALSO gonna uncheck, becomes greyed out! How am I gonna uncheck it now? Let's see if I should've unchecked it first, maybe... put the check BACK in the first line, now uncheck the SECOND line... yup! It works... if I uncheck the second line first, I can then also uncheck the first line. Now both lines are unchecked.
BUT... as I move my cursor to the bottom to click "Next" or "Finish", I see that the two buttons there say "I Accept" and "Cancel", rather than "Continue" or something similar. I don't like those words, especially the first one, that "Accept". What am I accepting, exactly? The main program is already installed.
I do NOT click "I Accept", just kind of assuming it means the same as "Continue"... it isn't logical... so after having unchecked the two lines I'm going to CLICK "CANCEL" HERE, just to be safe.
What if that really means "cancel my installation", though?
Well, again, that isn't really logical, as the main program is already installed. Why put a "cancel" to the main program now, at this point? Wouldn't make sense.
But what if it DOES mean that? I don't know for sure, after all.
Well, the answer to that is, if everything gets cancelled, I'll know it obviously, because I'll see it, and I'll just start over and click the other choice when I get to this point. On the other hand, if the installation proceeds, or finishes, I'll know I just prevented yet something else I wouldn't have wanted installed, which is good.
So I click "Cancel".
5. Looks like I made the right choice: the install did NOT cancel, and instead I have yet another offer now, this "Comodo Dragon" browser. This one's easy now, after the last one: I UNCHECK the install line (if I don't want it), AND AGAIN, CLICK "CANCEL" AT THE BOTTOM, not "I accept".
6. Yippee, installation is complete! And without anything extra apart from the main program, which is what I wanted in this case.
* * * * * *
Two final words.
First, to those who say "No way he knew how to navigate through step 4 the first time... who would know to click "Cancel" during an installation?!": you're right and you're wrong. You're wrong because yes, I did know, not because I worked it out just now, but because I learned years ago to look through these installs carefully, and had seen the Accept/Cancel thing a few times before, so I knew what it was soon as I saw it here and did in effect click the correct choice right away. But I said you're also right, and that's because the FIRST time I saw that, years ago like I said, I screwed up like everyone else. But you learn from your mistakes :)
Lastly, hopefully my little one-act play managed to illustrate why I said at the start there is no virus, no malware. All there is are promotional offers which require your vigilance while you install so that you can keep them from installing if you don't want them. Don't install on autopilot, clicking next, next, next all the way through — that's what they're counting on, and if you do it you're playing right into their hands... then ***** about viruses. Like I said, anyone can figure this out. If you followed me through this one, and I know a few did (the smart ones ;) you're pretty well armed for the next one now, because this one happens to cover most of the "techniques" used, so if you can do this one, you can do a very high percentage in a similar way. Just always look carefully, and scroll down to the bottom of anything scrollable, and look again, and make your choices. If you don't want something on your system it is ALWAYS possible to keep it from installing, whether by unchecking or clicking "Cancel" or some other means.
As a final word, please note that I'm only talking about C|NET here. I'm sure there are programs bundled with malware and viruses elsewhere, but you won't find them here, and if there are other download sites with good reputations that you trust, these same principles will apply to them too.
