CNET Editors' review
KMPlayer has changed a bit since we reviewed version 3.2 back in May. KMPlayer has always been popular and familiar software, so the latest version might be a bit of an eye-opener -- in good ways and bad. One of the new additions, "KMP Plus," acts as a dashboard for the program. On startup, users are greeted by an interactive home screen where they can watch promoted videos and advertisements, browse video channels, or access their own library content directly.
KMP Plus is attempting to become a premium service, but this 3.4 release highlights what seems to be early progress and execution. We clicked on a game trailer ad to discover a barely watchable, stuttering video stream. A few of the service channels were OK -- especially if you're into foreign movies and K-pop music -- and there's a small list of playable Flash games within the media player. They work, but it's a bit out of place to embed a Flash game inside what's primarily supposed to be a media player. Returning to the main menu isn't the most intuitive either. The so-called "service store" is also non-existent so far.
KMP Plus aside, KMPlayer is as good of a media player as it has ever been: the interface is slick and (outside of the anomalous KMP Plus performance) the menu transitions are quite beautiful. KMPlayer has evolved into a basic media center, with large buttons to help you navigate and add your content. The font choices are sometimes inconsistent and rather hard to read, but other than those quibbling details, KMPlayer is still the same feature-packed media-playing beast we've come to know in the past. The interface also includes some useful buttons like pinning to remain on top of your other open windows, and easily accessible tweaks to adjust your videos. Adjust brightness and contrast settings, rotate moving images, and add effects like motion blur in real time.
KMPlayer is like that kid who tries to redefine himself with swag -- he's got a new look and flashy toys that may sound good on paper, but he falls a bit flat in the execution. The extra widgets and features might grab your attention for a bit, but in the end the KMP Plus service still has a long way to go -- it's essentially still in a "proof of concept" stage. However, the core media functions are top notch and the media navigation is a pleasure to use after a bit of setup time.

"Messed up the default programming for all media files"
Version: KMPlayer 3.6.0.87
Pros
I loved the look of it, and it has the ability to capture frames, which is handy for gif making.
Cons
It AUTOMATICALLY became the default program for ALL of my media files, even though I did not want it to be used for music and actually watching video; I had just installed it to capture frames. I was perfectly satisfied with MPC. Most programs have the courtesy of asking if it should be made the default, but KMPlayer took the liberty of pissing all over everything to mark its territory. So even after uninstalling it I had to go and mess with the default programs to fix what it had messed up.

"Very good but has some flaws that need to be fixed"
Version: KMPlayer 3.6.0.87
Pros
(1) I haven't found a media file type that it couldn't play.
Have never received a codec error.
(2) Menu buttons, key assignments and aspect ratio options are intuitive.
(3) The default picture settings are better than VLC (VLC produces a faded looking picture in comparison).
(4) Like VLC, it has a ton of advanced options (if you want to use them).
(5) When playing a folder of FLV/MP4 music files, it makes sure they all play at the same volume level (VLC has a similar option but the VLC option also regulates the volume levels within the song itself .. ie, parts of the song that are supposed to be louder than others get suppressed and that's very bad).
(6) In almost all cases, KMPlayer just works very well.Cons
(1) If I play a folder of music video files (MP4, FLV, etc) while KMPlayer is minimized, KMPlayer becomes the active application every time it switches to the next track/file (even if KMPlayer is minimized to the system tray). This is a major problem because it means I can't properly work in other applications while KMPlayer is running.
(2) While installing KMPlayer, if you don't watch the installation options carefully, you'll end up with additional (junk) software installed on your computer.
(3) While installing KMPlayer, the description for some of the optional components is just bad. Deselecting one of the seemingly unneeded components results in a player with broken language character support (the player's menu options will be mostly in Korean and it loses its ability to display many fonts).
(4) If you have additional buttons on your mouse, they can be used to skip forward or backward five seconds but there is no option for setting them to a time lower than five seconds.Summary
I've used every media player available (except for the very obscure or blatantly junk). KMPlayer is still the best player (VLC is 2nd place).
IGNORE THIS REVIEW. It's for an older version of KMPlayer. Many issues have been fixed in the newer version.

"GONE BAD! STINKS!"
Version: KMPlayer 3.6.0.87
Pros
Few, if any. Don't bother.
Cons
Doesn't play well with Windows 7, or any other OS for that matter. Freezes up, and when it doesn't, it goes on line looking for codecs every time I open a file with it.
Summary
In it's youth, it was a pretty decent app. Now it just plain stinks. I went back to Jet audio.

"Once BEST. Now Malignant, VIRAL TRAP!"
Version: KMPlayer 3.6.0.87
Pros
Great resolution
settings to adjust colour & contrast, etc.
incredibly adaptive to almost any file
other features many don't haveCons
MALWARE:
I removed Ask and a couple others which offered boxes to opt-out with. BUT install, without any option to me added: PCcleaber, TopHat games, and an especially pervasive little bit of crap called "Iminent". Took me better part of a day to remove that pice of death!. There were HUNDREDS of instances in my registry. I have screen shots of it all should anyone care to see.
***Question: Cnet, when you MUST be aware of the dangers in this software...why offer it? *Are you being PAID as well?*
ron.kolman@gmail.com
I've an older version of KMplayer which didn't carry these diseases. I'll find something better and safe. My recommendation: STAY WELL CLEAR OF THIS VIRAL PLAYER.Summary
Was once best player. Now: STAY WELL CLEAR OF THIS TENACIOUSLY, MALIGNANT VIRAL software/PLAYER.

"Pretty good player but help/tech support is really bad."
Version: KMPlayer 3.6.0.87
Pros
Loved the fact that I could capture short clips of video in real time without having to rip the file to my HD. Good player, plays everything.
Cons
No real manual with instructions. One monitor responded to a question I had regarding what files I was able to capture video from, with a response he seems to give everyone. He never checked back to see if his suggestion worked(it didn't). No one else responded to forum question. Messaged KMPlayer via Contact option, never heard back. Posted my question in a different forum, still no response.
I just wanted to know whether avi files were the only file I could capture video from or was I supposed to be able to capture from any video file type.Summary
I've gone from being excited about this software to being meh and it's all about the tech help/support. I know it's free software, so I shouldn't expect anything but it's a pretty flashy and a good player-help people use it to best of its capabilities

"Takes over your codecs and your computer."
Version: KMPlayer 3.6.0.87
Pros
Plays nicely and is great as a stand-alone player. This is the lowest number of stars I have ever given so be sure you read my cons.
Cons
Adds its own codecs that re designate files so they play by default on KMP even if KMP is not your default player; it does this by placing a KMP prefix on all codecs.
These corrupt codecs somehow become the default codecs on simple download engines.
Defeats VLC so that it can no longer be designated as default player.
Makes some files impossible to delete or place in recycle bin.
Makes many other strange things appear on your computer.
If you try to delete it, many more strange things happen to your computer so that it seems like the only way out is to reinstall it and some way work around it.Summary
CNET needs to look at this program closely and figure out what is going on with it. It is not the CNET downloader but the KMP program itself that is at fault.

"Does everything but Blu-Ray. Add that for 5 stars."
Version: KMPlayer 3.6.0.87
Pros
Pretty, fast and capable of about any file type. Nice options.
Cons
Would be better with Blu-Ray, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant, etc. but some of that may well be in the future.
Summary
My go to app now for video files.
