I got this as a free option to CorelDRAW, and well... you get what you pay for in this instance. I am a fan of freeware, but Inkscape just doesn't live up to what it is supposed to be. You can do a decent amount of work, but it takes a while to figure out as it is not all that user-friendly.
For several version, the program will not print. I have designed things in Inkscape that I want to take with me into the garage to work on, and I can't because the program acts like it prints, but doesn't send anything to the printer. Several of my friends have had this issue as well, and I have even submitted a bug report on it, to no avail (with many strangers reporting they have the same problem). If you want to export your design so you can print it in another program, you have the option of exporting to a bitmap or... a bitmap.
I hate to say it, but I cannot recommend Inkscape until they get the printing bug fixed. I would like them to make it more versatile when exporting to other formats. -

Summary
Win 7 64-bit (don't get me started, back to the last big Mac I'll probably ever buy as soon as I can afford it). Couple of crashes with Inkscape running, but that's been about par for my very simple Windows complement.
Still, Inkscape looks like a textbook case of why I'd never install Linux (or any such open-source toys made for it) except in its own little box to play with Unix for free.
What/why is the shadowed box in the middle of every new document and how to get rid of it?
First time I drew rectangles they displayed per the tutorial, since then I can't even create one, except long enuf to establish that the rotate handles don't work. A spiral, yes, great if drawing a snail house. A circle no, fails as a 1:1 rectangle above.
No rulers? "No dedicated Measure tool" ! (faq). So except with repeated application of the one-shot workarounds mentioned by other reviewers here I can't even draw a 6x8' bathroom, let alone the house, or a wall of 1.5x5.5" studs with a 30" door (or Hobbit door) or a window in it, or an elevation?
Or specify, say, 1" = 12" to draw printable scaled plans?
BTW, if you're logged onto (e.g.) Live365 or lastfm radio, the online manual will simply take over that window instead of opening its own, likewise with the one-size-fits-all login service you open to ask them a question.
