I found it slow and unintuitive. Just zooming in and out is confusing! Pick the zoom tool, draw a rectangle, and it zooms in. OK. Now draw the rectangle the other way and ... it still zooms in. Alright, whatever. When I hold down shift, the zoom icon changes from a + to a -. Well, obviously now it's going to zoom o... er, in? I guess? Are you kidding me! Loading moderately-sized images, panning and zooming are all noticeably slow (on a newish 4 core laptop). I had a rectangular image of a hat on a white background and wanted to make it into a hat-shaped image. I'm certainly not experienced at image editing, but I've done this sort of think in Photoshop before without any help. I looked at every tool, every menu option and went through every tutorial. Then I looked in the web. 30 minutes in all, but no luck. Forget it.

Pros
I downloaded this for a design project after unable to access adobe illustrator. I can only come up with one advantage: Inkscape is user-friendly and easy to pick up.
Cons
After being relatively comfortable with using illustrator, Inkscape seems lacking (even if it is free). Not enough tools - eg. you cannot stretch and manipulate objects at all It seems 'medieval' compared to other programs out there.
Summary
Not worth it, don't bother downloading.

Does a lot -Saves to PDF -Opens PDF -Can export PNG -Layers -Convert a line drawing to an editable path

-I can't see the sublayers...I don't think this is an option -All exports, even to PDF with 300 dpi...Appears jagged...I am utterly disappointed by that. Otherwise it works beautifully -More manual and less user friendly, but getting used to it, in some ways I appreciated the layout of where everything is

It's okay to work with if you want to make a quick vector and looks best on smaller sizes. But it doesn't export well...

Deserves the time you may spend to learn all its rich features, e.g. Filters.
Cons
Inkscape assumes that if you download it from Thailand, for instance, you speak Thai. Then, menus are in Thai dusted with English words. I could not find any assistance from the Help menu in this regard. The trick is: 1/ Click on the last menu on the left. 2/ Scroll it down till you see an entry with a keyboard shortcut = Shift+Ctrl+P. Select this entry. 3/ This opens a page in English (miracle!) "Inkscape preferences". Select "Interface" 4/ On the right of the box "Language", use the selector to scroll a long list of languages. 5/ Select the one you want. 6/ There is no :"Save" button. Just close the page and restart Inkscape. (I am indebted to http://en.kioskea.net/faq/15154-inkscape-change-language for knowing that trick).

I think this software is great. I normally use CorelDraw and I will continue to use it, at least for now because I'm used to it. I can't afford the new version of Corel that's compatible with Windows 8.1 so I thought I would try this out. I am surprised at how well it works and all the great features there are.

It's easy and fun to use to do stuff.
Cons
It just got slower and slower as I added to my relatively simple 1st attempt. It became almost unusable. Printing to files like PDF, bitmap were also cripplingly slow.
Summary
It is fun to use, but gets slow if there is much in the drawing. I did not really try it for technical drawing, to see if it was useful as a real drafting package. I give it 2.5 for being fun
Can do a decent bit as long as you don't want to print.

I got this as a free option to CorelDRAW, and well... you get what you pay for in this instance. I am a fan of freeware, but Inkscape just doesn't live up to what it is supposed to be. You can do a decent amount of work, but it takes a while to figure out as it is not all that user-friendly. For several version, the program will not print. I have designed things in Inkscape that I want to take with me into the garage to work on, and I can't because the program acts like it prints, but doesn't send anything to the printer. Several of my friends have had this issue as well, and I have even submitted a bug report on it, to no avail (with many strangers reporting they have the same problem). If you want to export your design so you can print it in another program, you have the option of exporting to a bitmap or... a bitmap. I hate to say it, but I cannot recommend Inkscape until they get the printing bug fixed. I would like them to make it more versatile when exporting to other formats.
