Got a suspicious mind? In theory, IMMonitor Enterprise lets network admins patrol office Internet use by recording every instant message and e-mail that crosses their LANs. In practice, the program doesn't work as well as advertised. Users install IMMonitor Enterprise on an Internet gateway PC or on each computer in their networks. It supports most messaging clients and uses a Web interface for viewing logs and controlling the spy service--useful for tweaking settings from afar. However, though IMMonitor did a good job capturing instant messages in our tests, it failed to monitor e-mails. It also lacks filters for monitoring specific users and keywords. On top of that, the publisher's Web site doesn't appear to offer pages in English. We expect more from a program costing $129 a seat. The price of IMMonitor Enterprise fits the small and mid-size business market, but we'd suggest holding off until the developer adds features and gets the e-mail bugs under control.
