File Property Edit Pro

CNET Editors' review

by: CNET staff on May 27, 2009

Changing file attributes in one fell swoop is extremely easy, thanks to this well-designed and capable program. Despite a short trial period and file limit, we were still able to fully experience its superb performance.

File Property Edit has a very clean and easy-to-navigate interface that will appeal to all user levels. It flows in such a way that you know exactly where to go first. We added an entire folder and opted to include paths and subdirectories. The program also provides a filter feature. The contents of our folder immediately appeared in the interface window. From there, we had the options of modifying the file time and setting file attributes, such as archive, read only, hidden, and offline, to name a few. As soon as we clicked the Apply Changes button, the program instantly modified the file attributes. We were able to just as easily change the file attributes back to normal using the same steps, as well as by clicking the Undo Changes button. We were reminded of the program's 50-file trial limitation, but other than that the process worked exactly as it would with the registered version.

We would have liked to have seen a built-in Help feature, but there is a link to the publisher's Web site for help. We also would have liked to have a longer trial period than the given 15 days. Still, if you're looking for a no-nonsense file manager, this program is a worthy contender.

Publisher's Description

From Foryoursoft:

This is a software for modifying file attributes. With the power file and folder browse feature plus the drag and drop support, you can easily add a group of files or directories, and then change their create time, modify time, last access time, and other file attributes and properties. Also, the undo function allows you to rollback all the changes you just made with one click. Main features: Modify file and folder's created date time, modified date time, and Last access date time. Modify file and folder's attributes including Archive, Read Only, Hidden, System, Temporary, Offline, Content index, or Normal. Edit the file's summary properties including: Title, Subject, Author, Keywords, Comments, Template, Last Author, Revision Number, and App Name. Drag and Drop: It's easy to add files to the list, just drag files from anywhere and drop them to File Property Edit's list. Undo changes.

What's new in this version: Version 3.58 supporta adding internet shortcut files from add files dialog and improves UI on color, font, and icons.

    "Does not perform promised service."

    January 5, 2011  |   By drida

Version: File Property Edit Pro 3.35

    Pros

For the Free Download Version: The download and installation worked reasonably quickly and smoothly.

    Cons

For the Free Download Version: The software needs usability testing with a wider variety of users, and the instructions should be written by a skilled technical writer.

    Summary

For the Free Download Version: The interface requires the online instructions to use; it is not intuitive. The program appears to make the file property changes I entered (for author, company, and title). After I clicked "Apply Changes," I tested the actual file (select, right click, click on Properties, click on Summary) I found that the properties were not entered. However, the program did something to the file because now I could change these summary properties directly. This software should be considered in its beta stage, not yet worth paying for.

"It hung immediately on a search"

    November 18, 2010  |   By txbd75b

Version: File Property Edit Pro 3.35

    Pros

Nice interface, if it had worked!

    Cons

It's unclear how it would work since it hung when I told it to search my documents.

    Summary

It's only a trial ware product on CNET - glad I didn't pay for it only to find out it didn't work.

"Inept Programming of Trial Expiration Prevents Trial"

    September 20, 2010  |   By R_Sandman

Version: File Property Edit Pro 3.35

    Pros

Nice marketing, slick redirect to purchasing page to obtain your payment.

    Cons

Even ensuring you have the latest directly thru CNet, redirected from their homepage, provides you only with "Trial has expired". No, you'll not have yet tried anything-Yes, you'll be immediately taken to the Buy Me web-page.

    Summary

If something as basic as checking the current date during installation, then checking that against the current date during execution of the program, cannot be performed correctly...do you want to trust them to manipulate your file structure?

    "An appallingly non-user friendly software."

    September 4, 2010  |   By spartain

Version: File Property Edit Pro 3.35

    Pros

Not a thing I can think of

    Cons

Appallingly geeky and non-user friendly. No instructions, confusing installation for trial, a dud.

    Summary

This clearly has the look of software that has been written by some idiot geek, and has to be the most user-unfriendly program I have come across. All I wanted to do was to change the information in the Properties of my video files, but I just can't figure this out, and the useless online Help was totally useless. It wasn't in actual fact a help, but just a guide through the features.

Needless to say, I'm annoyed at having wasted my time on this useless inadequateware.
