"Gets the job done"

February 06, 2015

 |  Version: DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

Pros

*Can rip dvds files to computer impressively fast, I can get hours worth of tv series completed in five minutes flat. Fastest program I've used.

*I have not encountered the audio synch problems that I have incurred with similar titles available. It copies the dvd accurately. Your files will look good once they are finished.

Cons

*I have never seen such a memory hog! While I appreciate that it can rip files ultra-fast, it is not doing it efficiently. If I were to use freemake I could get a dvd file with all of its special features and even foreign language dubs included compressed down to 1 gb. This program will take nearly 6 gb. It is way too taxing to use regularly, this thing will eat up all of your disc space.

*Extremely ugly and outdated-looking program, very harsh, mostly a-chromatic colors- trash can grey is the theme. Some jagged lines, no pictures or light. It looks like something from the days of Dos.

*Creates too many subfolders.

*No other features apart from backing up your dvds, many of its competitors offer extensive video editing features and can help you to both download and upload to the net, and convert between a wide variety of forms.

Summary

I used this spur of the moment because one of my preferred progams was having trouble synchronizing the audio and video once. This did do what I needed it to do, I have my movie. So while it is accurate but its impractical to use everyday due to the way it goes through memory compared to other products. I have it here as a last resort if all else fails, its unappealing on its own.

"complete junk"

March 04, 2014  |  By mhs420

 |  Version: DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

Pros

WHATS A PRO? IS IT THAT THE PROGRAM IS NOT "FREE" AS CLAIMED OR THAT IT DOES NOT DO AS CLAIMED? HOW ABOUT THAT IT IS NOT USER FRIENDLY FOR THE TECH IMPAIRED.

Cons

IT IS NOT FREE AS CLAIMS IT WILL NOT SHRINK PROTECTED VIDEOS AS CLAIMED ON THE ACTUAL SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS SITE.

Summary

PROGRAM IS JUNK!!! FALSELY ADVERTISED AS "FREE" DOES NOT EXPLAIN HOW TO USE PROGRAM. IS MOST DEFINITELY NOT USER FRIENDLY. I HAVE NOTICED THAT MOST PROGRAMS OFFERED BY CNET HAVE BEEN INFECTED!!! IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR RELIABLE UNINFECTED PROGRAMS USE MAJORGEEKS.COM OR FILEHIPPO.COM

Funny how cnet get rid of their contact page. why is that because they get paid even for lying about a product. or can't handle the truth when people post complaints directly to them about a program they falsely reviewed What's excuse do you have this time cnet?

November 14, 2009  |  By adcat1963

 |  Version: DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

Pros

quick/simple to understand/ does all the hard work for you. free as a walk in the park.

Cons

nothing. it does everything that you want.

Summary

if like me you like movies then you want to keep a library but it gets mighty expensive when films are £10.00 a time. this software is foolproof (unless dvd disc is damaged) just remember you will also need DVD43 to encrypt the dvd first. and of course what do we want. FREE!!!

"Good Schtuff"

August 17, 2009  |  By mongo09876

 |  Version: DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

Pros

It's free, easy to use and free

Cons

There are no con's in my opinion and I'd say the same if I had to pay for it. Given it's freeware, I don't see how one would complain.

Summary

Don't know about the complaint that this is not freeware. I didn't pay a dime for it. Website (dvdshrink.org) has nice tutorials.

"the first "video grabber" i could actually get to work"

June 09, 2009  |  By dubhippy

 |  Version: DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15

Pros

it does what it's supposed to and doesn't trash your clips.

Cons

a little clunky at times eg. popping up over work you're trying to do in folders when it's done with a file & refusing to load more than 1 clip at a time in the same folder when editing a DVD, but with patience does the job.

it doesn't do w98

Summary

after installing at least a dozen alleged freeware converters for about 5 seconds to 10 frustrating minutes before uninstalling them and going back to square 1, i was happy when DVD shrink started saving the clip i just edited.

i wish they'd just put the editor onscreen instead of hiding it under a button with separate start & stop previews, but i'll gladly trade a little extra work for more precise editing than you can do in avidemux which DOES work with w98.

once you get used to it's idosyncracies, it's a program that gets the job done unlike almost anything else.

you STILL need to use an external editor though for that last bit of resolution as i think it's only accurate to about 1/4 to 1/2 a second so you either get unwanted dialogue at the beginning or end of a clip or you end up cutting off something. most of the time though it's edits are usable.

it's not an editor though. if you just want to copy a DVD in it's entirety, it's perfect. i use it to make clips that i convert to AVI & MPEG etc. for further editing. it lets me get my clips into fussy, AVI & MPEG hating hostile & ultimately crap audio & video destroying windows video editor.
