  but not in real time. Comes on quickly, but stays on much longer than the activity lasts. Mini mode is too big

  Does its job BUT CNET tries to foist crapware with it. I've encountered Blekko toolbar before - it's a nightmare to remove. Be very very careful with the CNET installer program.

  The program not only indicates activity but shows you a complete log of all activity since it started. Appears to be compatible with Windows 7

  When Windows 7 shuts down, program does not shut down and sometimes needs to be manually shut down before Windows 7 closes.

  Watching harddrive light on units located on the floor or dim displaying harddrive lights on hardware are a thing of the past.

  Pros

  Shows programs that are using my hard drive, but could never discover what. The first time I used it I discovered that microsoft was accessing my hard drive. Good to know as many programs run in the background and remain unseen.

  Easy download, setup problem free, and program works as advertized showing what programs are doing in the background causing disk light activity.

  Nice size square on the taskbar so it is easy to see. Doesn't take up too much resources (15K). Free, and no ads.

  Not an LED but I can't really hold that against it.

  I happen to like those LEDs on systems that show when the hard drive is active. Sometimes that little light is the only thing that keeps me from holding in the power button when nothing is changing on my screen. So when my new notebook PC (company provided) didn't come with a hard drive LED I tried not to panic. I was able to make it one day. (Hi, my name is Al and I?m a LED junkie.) I needed a fix. I did a quick search on download.com and came up with this sweet little app. It is simple and effective. It displays a nice size square on the Windows taskbar. The square turns red when the disk is in use and blue when it isn't. Almost as good as an LED. Now I can relax.
