Editors' review

Like previous releases, COMODO's free antivirus solution for Windows offers solid full-time antivirus protection and basic features comparable to similar freeware, including a desktop widget, firewall protection, Game Mode, drag-and-drop submission of suspicious apps for analysis, and cloud-based definitions, but it also comes with some unique extras, such as the COMODO Dragon secure Web browser, which is free, and the optional Geek Buddy support service, which requires a paid license.

Installing COMODO Antivirus involves several options, such as enabling cloud-based analysis of suspicious programs, which we accepted, and COMODO's free Secure DNS Server option, which we declined because it changes your PC's network settings, though we tried it before and found it reasonably fast. The Geek Buddy and related Anti-Error services provide live technical help, apparently, though they require activation. COMODO Antivirus' main interface is like other free antivirus tools in general layout and look, and you'll probably have little trouble setting things up, though a splash screen describes how to get started, and the Online Help options include an extensive manual and searchable forums. COMODO Antivirus automatically updated the latest definitions and started a full system scan, which found a couple of issues (nothing serious, thankfully) and removed them with a reboot for good measure (we could also opt for Geek Buddy help to make sure our PC was clean). COMODO Antivirus seemed to take a bit longer to update than similar tools and often involved a reboot; we didn't mind since we like thorough updates. Dragon generally lives up to its billing as "a faster, more secure version of Chrome."

We found that COMODO Antivirus also plays well with similar tools, including Microsoft Security Essentials, though we suggest taking care when mixing antivirus solutions. We're confident that COMODO Antivirus 6.2 is up to the task of protecting your PC, though.

"Love it, have used it for 2 years"

    August 12, 2014   |   By OneLuckyDucky

    Version: Comodo Antivirus 7.0

    Pros

I don't know it's runing most of the time. It doesn't slow up my machine and updates itself when I open my computer. I set it up to run once a day and it does that without slowing down my computer either.
When I have used other antivirus programs they have taken over my computer and slowed down my machine. This one doesn't. I still use Supe- antivirus software, but always have, and Malwarebytes.

    Cons

Nothing I have run into so far and like I said, I have been using it for 2 years. I have tried AVG, Microsoft program, Avast, Avira, etc., and like this one the best.

    Summary

Best software for antivirus I have ever tried....so far

"Works well as far as I can tell..."

    July 27, 2014   |   By limited_quartic

    Version: Comodo Antivirus 7.0

    Pros

Light on resources, fast enough. Has a lot of options, although not all intuitive. Tried a couple of test virus files, blocked them with no issue. Also removed/quarantined some infected files on my PC with no issue. Nice interface and easy to use. Has a sandbox to test files and programs. Includes cloud-based scanning, and uses Comodo servers for DNS if so chosen in options. Really nice.

    Cons

Don't have a lot of negatives. Have to be careful on the install to keep out nagware and paid upgrades, but other than that.. no issues so far. The desktop widget thingy can be turned off, which I did. Menus not completely intuitive, and a bit of a pain getting to the scheduled scans, but not that hard to find it and use.

    Summary

I don't understand the negative reviews. For a free anti-virus scan and removal system, I think it is the best out there. A lot less ads/nagware than AVG, Avira free versions, etc. I found no install issues on this Windows 7 64-bit system, no slowdown issues like the negative reviewers list. None whatsoever. The professional viewers were right. This AV is spectacular!

    Cons

    "One Billion Settings"

    March 16, 2014   |   By Pronounce

    Version: Comodo Antivirus 6.3.302093.2976

    Pros

Obviously a hyperbole, but I really enjoyed how many settings I could adjust to get the best performance. (BitDefender Free is terrible in this regard.) My computer's speed wasn't significantly effected.

    Cons

Ate 200MB of my very small Windows XP installation (160MB wo/AV).

    Summary

I played with the sandbox feature and found that it caused Chrome to lock up. Comodo gives you Dragon and Ice Dragon which are hardened Chrome and Firefox respectively for free. The kiosk mode is a virtual desktop that provides "security" for your browser, hasn't proven to be totally secure in some tests.

    "MALWARE!!!!!!!!!"

    January 17, 2014   |   By harster

    Version: Comodo Antivirus 6.3.302093.2976

    Pros

    hmmm, let me think......

    still thinking....................................................................

    Cons

Admittedly, the text I will paste in below, in the Summary, applies to a tech support request I submitted for the firewall, but I think you'll see it also applies to all of Comodo's software.

    Summary

I received a reply from Comodo with a link for a horrendously huge and long download for the entire suite. I replied to Comodo that I only wanted an update to fix a problem (reports all showed something like "nothing to report") with the firewall - just the firewall. The Geek Buddy reply was another link that the sender said would only be for the firewall. That was a lie. I ran the "upgrade" and ended up spending hours undoing the damage.

The download was still very large and laborious. The installation required TWO restarts. I had to decline a number of "extras" and yet Dragon and Geek Buddy were installed without my permission, some other bullshxt too. The GUI of the new firewall was completely and ridiculously unrecognizable. It reminded me of walking down a neon lit street in a red light district of a less fortunate part of the world, where all they want to do is drag you in the door, club you over the head and empty your pockets. No thanks. Been there - don't want to do it again. And the offer to have a Geek Buddy help me configure the installation??? - PURE bullshxt. The last time a Geek Buddy "helped" me, he screwed up my PC badly and it took hours for me to repair. Are you getting my point?

All I wanted to do was fix a small problem that would get my firewall to produce reports when I selected buttons that should yield that result. I spent hours doing two system restores, hunting out and removing elements of your absolutely malevolent "upgrade", re-downloading and installing my latest windows updates, and finally re-installing my Comodo firewall from the installation files I saved from two years ago. When I did that install, the automatic update (that I tried to do from withing the program before all this BS started) fixed the problem. I now have reports.

It's bad enough that the version from two years ago installed Dragon and Geek Buddy without giving me a choice, but to insult me further by "upgrading" me to a completely unfamiliar product and causing me hours of frustration is unforgivable.

I will use my firewall, the one I liked for the last several years, until it quits working, or until you stop supporting it, but I will never again recommend Comodo, and I will do everything I can to discredit Comodo at every opportunity I have. Your blatantly avaricious and malicious attempts to dig into my pockets and dazzle me with neon buttons and bright colors is pure bullshxt and I won't tolerate it ever again.

    Sincerely, your worst enemy,

    Harster

    Updated on Jan 17, 2014

After having a chance to think about it, I wish I could have used a bunch of obscenities in my review. I'm incredibly angry that a company I used to trust became so totally, blatantly, raptor-like.

    Updated on Jan 18, 2014

I APOLOGIZE TO COMODO. I gave Comodo Firewall a terrible review, but I was mistaken. I installed the product late at night, thinking it was just an incremental update, but it was really a MAJOR update to the extent that it looked like a scam. Because Comodo has been such a good product for me for years, I decided to give it another try today when I had more time.

The latest version of Comodo Firewall contains all of the familiar, excellent protection, and much more. It is an improved, faster product, containing several additional features.

The bottom line is that Comodo has produced an extremely effective and complete line of protection modules, that because of the large number of capabilities, may be intimidating. I'm an experienced user, and I prefer to do all of my own work. Comodo offers free Geek Buddy setup assistance and if I were a casual computer or device user, as most are, I would take advantage of this offer because of the enormous capabilities of their product.

    Updated on Jul 5, 2014

So here's the update to the update: After a relatively short time I updated the Comodo software again. This time the update refused to install. After several attempts, running around in circles, trying over and over, I simply gave up. Each time it said I needed to uninstall and then reinstall. The uninstall or the reinstall never worked - don't know which - maybe both. I'm guessing it's their bug, not mine because I'm now happily using a different AV/firewall suite with no problem for a period of two or three months.

    "Do not install this"

    December 14, 2013   |   By Quolen4

    Version: Comodo Antivirus 6.3.302093.2976

    Pros

    None at all

    Cons

It slowed my laptop right up when I installed it, I tried to restart it but it would not shut down. After about 30mins I shut it down by holding the start button and that was the end of my laptop, it won't switch on anymore.

    Summary

    Stay away from this.

"An AV program that behaves like a virus?"

    December 05, 2013   |   By yar12

    Version: Comodo Antivirus 6.3.302093.2976

    Pros

It seems to work as intended.

    Cons

Unfortunately, Comodo intends for it to behave like a virus - it pops up advertisements several times a day. I was under the impression that that's one of the things AV programs are meant to prevent.

Additionally, there are no useful configuration options, and no menu system. Whatever way Comodo wants you to use it is the only way it'll be.

    Summary

Avoid it. It seems that all of the larger AV companies, Comodo included, have started trying to scam money out of their users so I'd look for some lesser-known alternatives.
