Pros
Has salvaged data from my CDs, DVDs, and HDDs when all others have failed. CDCheck (final) version 3.1.14.0 works fine under Windows 7 32-bit SP1.
Cons
There is no way to target specific filenames or file extensions using CDCheck. CDCheck recovers EVERYTHING it can from the target disk or directory, including files you can already read fine. CDCheck 3.1.14.0 was released 12/08, and apparently will not be developed further.
Summary
If CDCheck can't recover your data, then probably nothing can. CDCheck has never failed me, even when all others have, including IsoBuster, DVD X Rescue, OnTrack EasyRecovery, Restoration, and CD Data Rescue. Be advised: Depending on how badly your data is corrupted, occasionally CDCheck data recovery can take a long time - sometimes DAYS! However, the long waits have always paid-off.

easy and correct install; easy to work with.
Cons
CD's with scratches needed lots of retries with CD copier; yet CDCheck said the disk was OK. I think it always says "OK" when data is recoverable, even after some retries. I did not do much experimenting with the software, though.

This excellent CDCheck software is FREE for personal use. But to get a free personal use license you need to go to their web site "order" page, create an account with a user name, password, and valid email address, then login and click he button to request a free personal use license. Enter the license code into the CDCheck/About/Registration/Code field and you are good to go! The current web site version as of 02/2010 is 3.1.14

Excellent program. It was cheap, only $15, to buy the personal license.
Cons
I don't like listing it as free, when it is actually just free to try so you cannot use the repairing process until you pay up. Very disappointing to discover after the scan that you can do nothing about what it turns up.

Detect and recover damaged files.

CDCheck is utility for prevention, detection and recovery of damaged files with emphasis on error detection. It can check each of your CDs and DVDs and indicate which files are corrupted. CDCheck reporting features tell you exactly where the problems are. CDs can get damaged in a number of ways, so the program helps you determine whether your data is safe before it's too late. The program also provides a comparison option that lets you select a reference directory on your hard drive. CDCheck ensures that the contents on a disc match those in the directory, and effectively alerts you of differences. Besides that CDCheck supports creation of CRC files which provide extra safety that files on your CDs are still exactly the same as they were.
