• Very flexible and Fun to use

  Backup Schedule is very flexible. You can setup any many schedule as you want and each schedule can have their own backup preference. You can have full backup. You can just backup changes since last full backup. Also you can backup changes since last partial backup It is very user friendly and guide you from step to step. Backup speed is pretty fast. The unzip file is shown right under the zip file in window explorer. You won't have any problem to locate the file. The log file is a good tool to check if the backup is okay or not. Make sure the Number of "to be backup" files/directories is exactly the same as the number of "Backed up" file

  Cons

  I experience some backup zip file which cannot be opened by WINRAR. This problem is easy to solve. Just download 7zip (free software) and unzip the file. The manual should have better example to show what is mean by (a) full back up (b) partial backup after full back up (c) partial backup after partial backup. I need to go to internet to search for help before I know what to choose

  Tips to use the software 1. Plan your schedule. In my case, I split the backup into 2 main categories. One is for folder which is unlikely to amend and the other is for folder which I always amend. For those folder which I hardly amend, I don't need to run full backup from time to time. It save me a lot of time. 2. Open the zip file after you run Full Scan and make sure you have no problem to open the zip file. Also visually check say the no of folders in the backup zip files is the same as those in original. You don't want surprise when you need to recover a corrupted file from backup file

  I tried bakeup maker and it would attempt to back up files or folders. never would complete any task.

  Summary

  I was looking for a back up program to back up my c:\ drive (windows7 included), because I did not want to have to start from the beginning each time my computer crashed. this program only backs up files or folders NOT the full hard drive.

• I've Used it For Years Without Problem

  Summary

  I've used this on XP for years, and now I'm running it under Windows 8.1. The only problem I've seen is that in some situations, the zip files can't be opened by 7-zip. That may be why some reviewers have reported corruption. However, I've had no trouble opening them with the windows compressed-file handling. This app really has a lot of features, but it's also simple to use. I now do my backups to OneDrive. OneDrive has a size limit of 2 Gigs, so I simply tell BackupMaker to split the files.

• Impossible to remove the program

  It turned out I did not need the program. it is impossible to remove it and stop the damned popup messages asking me to upgrade. I tried their removal program and also the Window 7 remove programs. In both cases it say the program is running and to turn it off. It is not running and the task managers shows no programs running. They do not answer my emails for help. The only phone number is in Germany. Avoid this program unless you want to see popups every time you start your computer.

  Summary

  Installed BackupMaker on Windows 7 running under Bootcamp on a Mac. Program gave me written reports following its verification process and typically verified all but 4 of my 10,000+ files were successfully backed up. Initially I did my own verifications to make sure I could really extract the backed up files from the zip archives this program saves the backups to and it worked. However, a year or so later and many backup disks later my drive failed on the computer. I put my last backup disk in two other computers of my own and both said the zip archive was corrupt. Tried the next previous backup disk and it also was corrupt. Took the backup disk to the Apple Store and they confirmed the zip was corrupt and useless. This software let me down big time by failing to do the one job it is supposed to do. The worst part was the verification was false. Cost me days of my time recovering some of my files using repair software on the zip file. I would only recommend this software to my landlord.

  A few days ago I tested Synchredible (other Ascomp tool) and I liked it very much, so I decided to test the backup tool, too. And I am surprised as it is a smart piece of software: it is very easy to use and it creates backups with zip compression. Unfortunately, it cannot create a system image, but in my case that's no problem since Windows 7 already owns an image function. Currently I am thinking about buying a full version of both programs, but first I will contact the author and try to get a discount, too! ;)

  Free version doesn't back up open files Only backs up files and directories so you need to know where your program data files (e.g. mail data) live. Doesn't do mirroring (backup with no zip) but see below how to do this. Doesn't back up the registry (but see below how to do this)

  I wanted all the above pros. I wanted automatic conversion of Incrementals and Differentials to Full. I wanted to keep only certain numbers of each type of backup. I couldn't believe that this program did everything I _*needed* and it was free. I used to use Cobian backup but it was quirky and unreliable. I tried various paid backup programs (Acronis, NovaBackup, Paragon) but they were really hard to use compared to this and very expensive. As far as open file backup is concerned, yes, if I need it, I'll pay the modest amount for it. To back up the registry, create a DOS batch file that gets Regedit to export the keys you want into a file. Run this as a pre backup task. Set the output file to be backed up. To do mirroring, use ASCOMP's free Synchredible program. Forget the criticisms of the limitations of old versions - this was for version 6.304 and it has been greatly improved - no file limits for example and I haven't seen any nag screens. I haven't tried to uninstall it.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Feb 1, 2012<p/>I have now had time to use this a bit more. It still is a very good program. However it bugs the heck out of me with pop-up nag screens about buying the licenced version. OK so I thought I would. It costs about $33 for a 3 licence private version. Now I want mirroring on top of that through Synchredible, also at $33 plus backing up open files at $20 each. The total comes to $106. Frankly that's jusr not competitive when I can get Backup4All for $49. Backup4All is not so easy to use but is more powerful. Sorry ASCOM but you've a great couple of programs that are ideal for the home user, but you shouldn't be charging company prices.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Feb 2, 2012<p/>I bought Backup Maker, Synchredible and the open file addons because I contacted the company, who were very willing to listen to my comments. Let's hope they review their policy for home users because these products are ideal. Check out their other offerings on their German pages. If they offered these in English and had bundle discounting they would satisfy the need of most users. Write to them and encourage them :-)

• Worthless garbage

  Cons

  Doesn't uninstall properly. Fails to back up saying, it's run out of space when it hasn't. Doesn't run as a service. Doesn't use shadow copy. Requires manual configuration of what should be obvious defaults.

  Summary

  Dreadful enough for me to suspect it's possibly malware. Absolute garbage. Avoid at all costs.
