CNET Editors' review
Thanks to this free program's simple approach to backing up files, novice users will find it to be an exceptional tool for protecting their files.
Once activated, AutoVer can be accessed from a taskbar icon. Its user interface has very straightforward commands for adding and deleting files you want to watch and backup when needed. Adding new files was as easy as creating and naming a new file, adding the folder you want to backup, and then choosing the backup location. Our selected folder was immediately created and saved to our location of choice. More advanced settings let you choose specific files you want to include and exclude from the backup process, as well as adding a time stamp. You can also pause and resume the backup of specific folders using the command button, and the search feature lets you explore folders that you have backed up.
AutoVer includes a Help menu, but because the program is so easy to use, we doubt you'll need it. Novices will especially appreciate this simple backup program, but we recommend it for any user that doesn't want to mess with too many configurations to back up their files.
Publisher's Description
From Bean:
AutoVer is a configurable, automatic or real time backup and personal versioning system. It can be used as a simple real time backup or as a more complex version control system. The beauty of this system is that once you set it up (which is extremely simple) it does everything. No remembering to backup or to check in or check out files. Every time you save a file it is copied to your backup folder or drive.
You can include and exclude certain files and browse the backups with the Backup Explorer. Great for backing up (or one way synchronizing) your work or home documents to flash memory or saving every change you make to your source code or image files.
What's new in this version: Version 2.1.1 has fixed delete folder not deleting backup when "Delete backup when original is deleted" is enabled and run on copy gives and error if no params supplied.

"Does the job; a little geeky"
Version: AutoVer 1.4.3
Pros
Transparently saves versions of kind and when you wish.
Cons
Takes a little attention to set up, but this is not really a negative. Sometimes misses a stitch in forming a new folder. Has crashed but rarely.
Summary
Autover saves the bacon for anyone who does very detailed edits in real time. Saves from disaster by keeping updated versions at save time. I suppose it could be a good backup app, too, I don't use it that way.
Forgot to mention that it works much better than Stardock's KeepSafe, which would often give 0 byte files. AutoVer does give good recovery files and faithfully.

"Don't lose a minute's worth of work!"
Version: AutoVer 1.4.3
Pros
Lets you back up files and folders in real-time, so if you should have a problem, you don't have to lose anything, even if you just modified the file five minutes ago. Can keep multiple versions or just a current copy. Doesn't bog the system down.
Cons
A bit cumbersome if you have files all over the place; not really suitable for mirroring a complete drive (although it will do it if you ask it to). Cannot currently use a Windows 7 library as a backup source, although this is suposedly in the works.
Summary
You still need a "full" backup program to do regular backups of your complete hard drive, but this program works great to keep your files that change most frequently constantly up to date. After you make changes to a file in any of your "watched" folders, a copy is created in the corresponding backup location within seconds of the change. You can backup sub-folders as part of the same watch, as well as create multiple historical backup versions if you desire. A desirable feature for Windows 7 users would be to "watch" a library as a backup source; then you could add folders to the library and they would automatically be added to the watch. While this feature does not exist in the current version, the developer has indicated that this would be considered for a future release. You can add folders within a library, just not the library itself. But even Windows 7 users can find much usefulness in the program as it stands right now.

"Great real-time backup!"
Version: AutoVer 1.3
Pros
Backs up files in real time. Can keep multiple versions if you wish. File copying happens practically instantly.
Cons
Default settings when creating backups are not configurable.
Summary
A great program to supplement routine full computer backups. Pick the directories that change often and set up a "mirror" directory on another device and keep up-to-date copies of your files in case of disk troubles or other catastrophe.

"Great Design But Wouldn't Work"
Version: AutoVer 1.2.2
Pros
Design was just what I was looking for.
Cons
Wouldn't work. Watched folders that were to be backed up disappeared every time the program was shut down and reopened.
Summary
When I listed the folders to be backed up it worked great and backed up everything perfectly but when I shutdown my computer for the day then reopened it the next day, all my folders would disappear from the backup list. I redid them several times but each time on shut down they vanished. Wish the creator of this software would revise it so it would work. He stopped his involvement with it over a year ago. What a disappointment when I finally found a simple backup software and can't get it to work.

"Good. Haven't had to "restore" so that would be proof."
Version: AutoVer 1.2.2
Pros
Free. Use in addition to Back2Zip (old version)
Cons
Not particular intuitive but then you rarely get a lot of documentation with freebies.

"Does back-up job that Maxtor One Touch S/W quit doing."

Pros
Functions well.
Cons
Austere feature set.
-
"Excellent piece of software!"
Version: AutoVer 1.2.2
Pros
Does exactly what it says! I set it to backup my files and it does it quite well and with no flaws! Just what I was looking for! :)
Cons
Nothing yet!

"I like the realtime backup"
Version: AutoVer 1.2
Pros
Just installed and tested a few files. Works as advertised. I'm using it to backup to an external hard drive. I need to try it a while longer to make sure there are no bugs.
Cons
You have to set up each directory separately that you want to back up. Unless you select the whole drive. It would be nicer to be able to select multiple directories for one session.
