AutoMate is more than an application--it's practically a platform. Its raft of features relieves the burden of monotonous tasks. The clean interface easily manages numerous tasks and carefully guides you through adding new ones. If a problem occurs, you can refer to the extensive documentation. AutoMate can run any combination of actions triggered by conditions, such as time, keystrokes, and system-configuration changes, even if the PC is logged off. Actions include running a program, opening a Web page, sending keystrokes to an application, clicking a button, downloading a file, and running a database query. Triggers include the start, end, or nonresponse of Windows processes or services, as well as start-up events, such as a specified user logging on. Administrators can control an AutoMate client from any machine on a TCP/IP network and send tasks to several computers at once. Automation Markup Language and BASIC engines let advanced users script complex tasks with data-formatting and retrieval capabilities. AutoMate isn't for everyone, but the program will pay off big for corporate users who need to automate complex tasks.

"Best for complex enterprise systems, not individuals."

December 15, 2012  |  By mellington2012

 |  Version: AutoMate 9.0.3

Pros

- The most powerful automation tool available (for Windows OS)
- Relatively easy drag-n-drop for most scripting
- Most powerful not only in automating workflow among applications but among computers within networks

Cons

- Very little internal application scripting (is Windows OS fault)
- Sometimes impractically slow to start or complete a script (fine for enterprise work but not for individual users)
- Crashes or freezes sometimes (probably due to app conflicts)

Summary

Automate is unsuitable for almost all individual users due to its high cost, but it is irrefutably the best solution available for mid to large size enterprises, or the rare small business or professional with exceptionally complex automation processing needs—hence the justified high cost that the high-end market can bare to get the best automation tool (for the Windows OS...there are much better for Mac and Linux/Unix).

"Great for the trial period. Too expensive for purchase."

December 12, 2011  |  By jkayne72

 |  Version: AutoMate 8.0

Pros

Very easy to use and move things around around. Is a great tool for automating repetitious tasks. Love the drag and drop/click functionality. Even those with little knowledge of programming can make an application.

Cons

Trial period is too short and after that, the software is too expensive. Would be great if I were a large corporation.

"An Infinite Canvas of Windows Control & Automation!"

January 05, 2010  |  By azeemtahir

 |  Version: AutoMate 7.1.1

Pros

- Automate anything! I mean, ANYTHING! Automate to Levels You have Never Done Before!
- Complete Automated Control over any Application after Start-up or via Scheduling
- Not Resource Savvy
- Slightly Easier to Use than few other Substitutes

Cons

- Complicated for a Novice User: Only Pros Invited
- Price is a serious Rip-off. Should sell for at-least 1/5th of Quoted MSRP
- (Didn't check if certain on-screen Tasks can be programmed to run in Background or not)

Summary

If you need a Robot to be sitting on your computer and do various tasks for you instead of you being there, look no further.

Amongst several other similar software applications, this program stands out since it has it all: Automated Event Logging, Scheduled Device Management, Reporting, Task Management & Execution or Termination Triggering, Controlled Application Execution and Instruction Automation.... you name it. The program is literally a canvas of computer automation and control with only one limit: Your own mind! Whatever you can imagine, you can do with this application. So it's up to YOU to use it to your requirements and exploit it in the best way possible.

Basically, this program is a more sophisticated form of the task-manager, in which you define tasks triggered by certain events (start-up, log-in, shutdown, as well as any other application or service termination or execution). Whenever that happens, or whenever you command, the program will execute instructions already scripted or defined by you via a not-so-friendly UI. The scripting could get tricky and complex. Still, once you devote yourself a little, learn through the included tutorial tasks, and understand how to program the application, you will soon realize that the program can do almost anything you command while you are away dealing with other more HUMANLY things in life. Even though the authors have struggled a lot to make the programming easier, there are probably two things limiting this application:

- The Price.
- The Usability.

No-one ever said it's going to be a piece of cake to control the entire functioning of your computer by a few lines of code. It is but natural for an application of this stature to still contain complicated scripting and program-ability, and obviously, the more sophisticated and flexible a user wants it to be, the more complex the usage and manageability could get.

However, the ask price for having such a magic wand is a lot... Almost ~$1,500 basically targets the industry and corporate user and thus, home-users and even certain office-users would rather 'pass' and look for something less complex (though also less promising) , which explains a limited audience for this application. Unless it is given away at less than $200, a normal computer user will not look here for automation at such a price. However, professionals would still want something like that in their start-up list.

Well, at the end of the day, you decide for yourself. But this does not mean that you simply ignore this beauty. At least, I STRONGLY recommend that you download the demo version (30 days try), and check out for yourself what it can do, and if you really think you need it...

Ignoring the price-tag (and being slightly biased here), I give it a 5/5. If one managed to buy this product, they don't know what they're capable of.... Mua-ha-ha-ha-hA-HA!!!

"Good but for the money WinAutomation is the way to go"

November 30, 2009  |  By billc58

 |  Version: AutoMate 7.1.1

Pros

1.Ease of use
2.Comprehensive action list

Cons

1. Priced out of the market
2. Buggy in spots
3. Some actions take too long to kick in

Summary

I have used Automate for years but starting looking for an alternative when their pricing went through the ceiling.

WinAutomation has virtually the same ease of use and action list and is a fraction of the price. In addition, my jobs that I have translated from Automate to WinAutomation work faster and more reliably.

You can also compile jobs for anyone to use. Every user of Automate scripts have to buy their own copy of the program.

"Not so great"

November 23, 2007  |  By biztastic

 |  Version: AutoMate 6.2.3

Pros

easy to use, nice record feature

Cons

Automate is over sugar coated and over exaggerated. I make a task that should execute in 15 second intervals, the task starts but what the task is supposed to do takes longer than 15 seconds to do it, so the task is not done correctly. It sits there analyzing objects in the windows when it doesn't have to because I specified which control to press in which window, it wastes valuable time on something simple. It is also very buggy, doesn't always execute a task, and sometimes says it can't communicate with it's service. I will try AutoHotKey and trash Automate. If IT professionals use something as time wasting and buggy as this, then this truly is a sad world.

"THE hands-down, absolute BEST Automation suite available!"

May 03, 2007  |  By Spoon!

 |  Version: AutoMate 6.1.1

Pros

"AutoMate 6" is the ONLY product currently available that is capable of scripting and completely automating ANY task that could otherwise be performed by a real, live person. For a simple task, it's great - but it truly shines for large-scale, complex, mission-critical implementations. In the hands of a capable developer or system administrator, there is NOTHING that can't be automated (across ALL environments) with this product. The product is really a 'Suite' of integrated tools that when taken together become almost a completely new methodology in the practice of both Tactical (ad hoc and/or daily) and Strategic Business Process Automation. In my well over 20 years in the software development & solutions consulting industry, no other single software product has impressed like AutoMate has.

Cons

It does NOT cost enough! As if it wasn't enough for we developers to have to fight against much of our clients using "offshore" solutions! I'll NEVER be able to retire if the small, mid-size, and large companies that keep me employed find out how easy to use - yet truly powerful this package is! Oh well, so what if I have to 'work' til I drop - as long as I get to use AutoMate, it won't really be 'work' at all!

"This product is truly awesome."

November 28, 2006  |  By joekosco

 |  Version: AutoMate 6.1

Pros

I don't know code. I don't know how to script. But none of that matters with AutoMate. All you need to understand is the logic of your IT tasks and processes. Even though it's easy to use, AutoMate also provides me with the power to automate and streamline any process.

Cons

More task templates would be nice.

"Good software, but NOT suitable for web automation"

September 03, 2006  |  By browsergirl

 |  Version: AutoMate 6.1

Pros

Probably the best Windows OS automation software on the market

Cons

If you need to automate BROWSER related tasks such as form filling or downloading, we found that a specialized tool like iMacros works *much* better and more reliably.
