Lacking a fancy name and a fancy interface, and still in beta, Auto Kindle eBook Converter nevertheless quickly converts some of the most-used desktop formats to a Kindle-friendly MOBI for free.

Compatible with PDF, HTML, LIT, PDB, and CHM files, the program opens to a Windows file browser. Choose the file you want to convert, hit Open, and then choose your destination folder. The converter goes to work, generally converting files quickly--although this depends on the length of your document. When it's done, connect your Kindle to your computer and move the file into the Documents folder. Safely disconnect the Kindle, and the converted file will appear in your main list of documents, automatically converted on the Kindle to its default MPB format.

The freeware converter is dead simple but there's plenty of room for improvement. The most obvious thing it's missing is a graphical interface, which could be combined with a default output directory to cut out several steps. Some formats may also hiccup on images, so don't be surprised if pictures don't always convert. However, it works and offers users another option besides e-mailing documents to their Kindle and paying the small conversion fee.

What’s new in version 0.4.50

Now adds a configuration manager that will allow users to set defaults on output file and PDF image processing for better streamlining of the conversion process.

I opted out of loading SnapDo. After an ugly download using CNET download manager and error messages everywhere. I installed the program. SnapDo took over IE and Mozilla. I Finally got rid of everything and got my address bar search set back to my favorite. Then I tried the program... It DOES NOT convert from epub to Mobi!!! what a waste.

Absolutely none. I completely regret installing this program and I will NEVER use CNET for anything, ever again.

Malware on my computer as a result of trusting CNET with this installation.

I installed this program and along with it came several issues. I have been trying over the past 2 days to rid my computer of these heinous programs with little success. I have had to run system restores, bot-checkers, the whole deal. DO NOT download this!

Wouldn't convert properly. Won't open on it's own, took time to determine how to figure where I could even load my source file.

Fortunately, I didn't leave on my computer long enough to have as many problems as others and I didn't read any other comments prior to downloading, which I normally do, when CNET gives the program a bad rating. I have just given my outdated laptop a new Norton software, so it was fully protected, and I didn't open any new web pages, or my Micrsoft office Pro, or I would have been very upset. Thanks for helpful reviews listed above mine.

The generated Kindle readable file information lacks alot of the formatting from the original PDF file. This can make it somewhat difficult to read the converted file in Kindle.

After downloading this program, my IE browser became unstable, and my MS Works program would shut itself down every time I tried to open it. I uninstalled the program and things are back to normal now. Don't know what the problem was, but I don't think I want to try it again. Thanks anyway.

Convert HTML, PDF, and LIT CHM, PDB files to Mobi format.

By utilizing some very common processors I have created a small one at a time file processor that takes a source pdf lit or html document and converts it to a mobi pocket file via mobigen. This transfer does not bypass and DRM and generally excludes images from the final document. Some errors exist with .lit file processing due to the lit processor. Sometimes filenames do not process correctly and the lit converter is not compatible with windows 64. Changes are being made to include a different processor to allow for more reliable operation.

Version 0.4.35 now supports full image support for PDF file processing using ghostscript.
