Active@ KillDisk gives you a fast, easy way to delete your files and folders for good if you're getting rid of your hard drive. While it's not as advanced as some other permanent deletion programs, it offers enough bonus features to keep you interested. The professional, welcoming look earns it a few extra points.

Active@ KillDisk lets you take another pass at your deleted files and unallocated disk space to make sure your deleted files stay deleted if someone tries to recover them. The program scans your disk automatically and gives you a hierarchical view of what's on your drive so you know exactly what you're deleting. The free version of the program we tested only gives you one pass, which is nowhere near as secure as the military-grade standards that other permanent erasers give you. The program will push up to those standards if you're willing to pay for it, though. It does let you create a brand new boot disk, which can be handy to have if you're using an unstable machine. It even works in DOS and lets you visualize your disk in its true binary code. Those aren't cosmetic add-ons by any means, but it's up to you if these features make up for the lackluster data security.

Many people who are heavy into security may want something that does more than just one overwrite, which is fair. Active@ KillDisk is a cool program for anyone else who is willing to sacrifice that extra security for a few utility features, though. Even better, it gives you the best of both worlds if you're willing to spend a few bucks.

"The free version works fine for basic disc scrubbing."

    February 26, 2014   |   By alanrc1234

Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 8

    Pros

Easy to use; erased a 500GB hard drive in about an hour.

    Cons

Free version only writes zeros, not random characters. The paid version is a little expensive.

Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 8

    Pros

    none at all ,,,,

    Cons

there isnt any point even trying this software ,it only allows you to use a single pass wipe , so you may aswell just dump your files in the waste bin

    "Didn't work."

    August 12, 2013   |   By OrangeCountyCa

Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 7.5

    Pros

    Can't see any.

    Cons

Asked it to "Kill" the hard drive and Error Message 5 says it can't write to certain sectors asks me to ignore it and further error messages ask me to ignore the problem until, apparently, the whole drive was being ignored.
While reporting that it has swept the whole drive my PC remains absolutely unchanged after the experience. It was one new (worthless) program.

"Seems to get the job done."

    May 05, 2013   |   By csharpman

Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 7.0

    Pros

I've used Kildisk several times when I'm donating an older PC to charity. I have no reason to believe that people are any more nosey than they need to be but I also didn't feel like going through an entire hard drive and trying to remember what files that might have confidential information, etc.

Using the free download and the instructions provided with it, you can create a bootable CD (in the past, I've done 3.5" diskettes). You run Killdisk from the OS kernal on the CD to wipe a machine's primary drive.

    Cons

None that I can see. Some people seem to feel that some form of multiple pass process is required to be really thorough. Maybe I'm missing something but if Killdisk really writes a binary zero to every byte on the drive, that sounds pretty darn "wiped" to me.

Admittedly, I have no particular knowledge of DOD standards or Gutzman algorithms, etc.

    Summary

Free, easy to use. What more do you want?

    "It is FREE and SUFFICIENT"

    April 06, 2013   |   By bbunch1970

Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 7.0

    Pros

will erase files and free space. Anything more than the 1 pass it does is a waste of time unless you have a very old drive (well under the Gb mark).

    Cons

    won't run on older OS's

    Summary

The Erasing tools I use are this, Eraser(the old 5.6 ver), DBAN, and the secure erase built into ata drives(this will wipe areas not accessible to most other wiping software if you are concerned about forensic level wiping).

    "Keeping things simple"

    February 15, 2013   |   By tiltmonster

Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 7.0

    Pros

In a few steps, the job is done; without learning a boat-load of support detail.

    Cons

Not enough about ISO image and bootdisc creation, on preliminary download pages; for new users. Something that says "program requires software, to burn ISO image on boot disc" might help. For those familiar with this format its obvious; but I spent a long time isolating this small detail, from a succession of other issues. It is very simple, once the image is properly burned.

    Summary

I like simple software; when it is something I may not use very often. This fits that bill. I don't fault the software for my lack of knowledge, on available software, that will burn an ISO image. Perhaps a brief mention, or link on sight page, or download pages; explaining ISO file formats..... since many people may not have software at hand; to burn this format. All in all, a nice little program.

Version: Active@ Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser 7.0

    Pros

If this version is anything like it's old cousin, it's going to be worth having it.
