Editors' Review

Acronis True Image lets you back up your PC thoroughly, preserving a complete image of your entire system in the cloud or on a local drive. With this comprehensive application, you'll never have to worry about losing any of your files, and if something goes wrong, you can restore your computer right back to the way it was.

Pros

Backup options: Acronis True Image gives you multiple options for backing up, including the ability to store your backup on a local drive or in the cloud. You can choose to back up your entire system or only certain files and folders. And once you've created your initial complete backup, True Image will create continuous incremental backups to record only items that have changed, which saves both time and storage space.

Time Explorer: When you restore, you can, of course, opt to restore the most recent version of your files. But if you would rather restore from an earlier version, you can use the app's Time Explorer feature to go back and locate the past image you want. This can be done for individual files as well as the entire system.

Cons

Tough for beginners: The main interface is straightforward enough, and if you stick with the default settings, it will walk you through the basic backup process smoothly. However, there are various advanced options that an inexperienced user could quite easily select by accident, and they are not accompanied by clear explanations of what they will do.

Bottom Line

Acronis True Image is a great way to back up your PC so that you can restore quickly and get back on track. While it may not be the best choice for novice users, anyone with more advanced skills and needs will enjoy the power and flexibility that this program provides. You can try it for free for 30 days, with a free 250GB of cloud storage space. After the trial period, True Image costs $49.99, and the cloud storage plans range from $9.99 per year for 5GB to $99.99 per year for 500GB.

"No Support After 30 Days"

January 26, 2015  |  By SKMetz

 |  Version: Acronis True Image 2014 2014

Pros

Seemed to kind of work for a few months

Cons

After using it for a few months it simply stopped working correctly and generating error messages. Acronis "technical support" said that they only provided support for 30 days and I'd have to pay for them to tell me how to make this work again. Uninstalled it and bought a different product.

"Free-to-try for 30 days.... except if you want to clone"

January 24, 2015  |  By billyknit5150

 |  Version: Acronis True Image 2015 1.1

Pros

It's free for 30 days

Cons

You can't use some features until you buy. More specifically, the 'Clone' feature.

Summary

I was going to forgo the terrible reviews here buy if it met my 1 need: Cloning. This feature is locked unless you buy. I'll never even know if it's any good.

"Working fine"

December 21, 2014  |  By Sadsaytr

 |  Version: Acronis True Image 2015 1.0

Pros

I also have been using Acronis for years. I must be doing something wrong, as I have NEVER had issues. Not on XP, Vista, 2000 or Windows 8. I have it on 3 different PC's. I have had no problems restoring from any of my external USB drives. I avoid saving to the cloud so maybe that is where the problem is.

Cons

None in particular

Summary

It works, I don't use any features, like backing up every other day. I manually backup once every week or so.

"Save your money, this software is crap!"

November 04, 2014  |  By bobkivi

 |  Version: Acronis True Image 2015 1.0

Pros

None that I can see, it plain doesn't work!

Cons

Software doesn't work
Support is aweful and/or non-existant

Summary

Save your money, Macrium Reflect is much more reliable, easier to use. I have been a tortured user of Acronis products for over 10 years....NO MORE...too crappy. User interface changes all the time, base engine never gets fixed and Support is horrific!!!
SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!

"So bad it makes you cry"

November 01, 2014  |  By j7h

 |  Version: Acronis True Image 2015 1.0

Pros

Don't know, it won't load onto Win7 64 bit. There is *already* an unanswered case in Acronis, number 66914. It just complains that a "True Image tool is runnig" (their spelling, not mine), odd since I even uninstalled my old version.

Cons

Just as bad as other versions. It will drain your life away as you try to get it to do anything.

Summary

I have Acronis 2012, widely acknowledged as one of the worst pieces of SW ever written. Every command takes 10 minutes or more. Now it can't even find the backup files on my local server, even when I stick its nose in them.
So I thought I'd upgrade to 2015. No luck. It won't even install. I even uninstalled 2012 and it won't install.
Stay far away from this! Life is too short to spend it cursing at your PC.

"terrible software, terrible support, rude managers"

October 03, 2014  |  By jakeernest

 |  Version: Acronis True Image 2015 2015

Pros

I'm hard-pressed to find anything positive to say. There's much better, more intuitive backup software available for about the same price. I guess if I had to say something positive, I'd say the installation went smoothly (as long as you remove the previous version first).

Cons

Nonstop backup is a non-starter. It's a joke. It's impossible to recover anything using it. The incremental backup works, but even that is clunky and makes it difficult to open the vaults (or whatever they call them) to find the item I need.

The company representative love to play the game of "it's a backup problem," so they don't have to support the software after 30 days. I actually had a tech support person tell me this (out of school). He probably got fired for saying it.

None of the upper managers are worth talking to. They don't return calls or emails.

Summary

Don't bother. There's better out there. I have 20 years of experience with backup and recovery software, and this product is a loser.

"Worst software ever"

September 19, 2014  |  By trek_b

 |  Version: Acronis True Image 2014 2014

Pros

None. Full of bugs.

Cons

It is incredible that in 2014 a company can place a product in the market as buggy as this.

Bought 2014 family pack. Installed on the first computer and configured some backups. On that computer even if the backup fails, everything is green on the main dashboard.
A simple change in parameters of a backup is not possible without corrupting the other backups.
Backup from a network server does not work. TI keeps failing connecting to the server, even if when configuring the backup there is no problem accessing the server.
Backup to a network server takes an eternity. Network usage 3%...
Random crashes and backup configuration corruption.

This software is unusable. DO NOT BUY IT. Looking for alternatives...

"OK if your thinking mirrors the Acronis geniuses."

September 16, 2014  |  By moofah

 |  Version: Acronis True Image 2014 2014

Pros

Robust feature set. Helpful volunteer-run user forum.

Cons

Program had difficulty handling situations when the external backup drive was not constantly connected (such as during travel). Unpredictably monopolizes computing resources for hours at a time performing unnamed background tasks. Known program flaws have not been addressed.

Summary

Acronis has a long history in the backup software business and a helpful forum populated by experienced and enthusiastic users. However, my attempts to use their program in a fairly simple Windows 7 configuration using a laptop and an external hard drive ran into trouble. The difficulty seemed to be that the laptop was occasionally undocked and carried around.

In addition, I could never be sure when my computer would be available for use. At unpredictable intervals the CPU resources were consumed by Acronis maintenance routines that went on for hours without any indication of when they would be completed.

There are workarounds for these things -- some of them involving external scripts and program hacks suggested by helpful forum members. But the program itself seems bloated and buggy.

In short, if you use your computer the way the Acronis program authors think you SHOULD be using it, things might work just fine for you. Otherwise, get set for some frustrating moments and a round of platitudes from the support staff.
