This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Zend Studio could be a killerApp for PHP developper, a great work have been made but: - Zend does not realease php 5 upgrade , and don't support upgrade. - Zend does not support character display on Macintosh - Zend does realease his product for Macintosh in a beta state - Zend does not have at least one Macintosh specialist in house - but pretend to sell Macintosh Product !!! - Zend just don't have a professional level support - but nice studdent that do their best. - Zend Product are delivered "has is" and whenever you will have a problem it is your problem, no professional developpers are dedicated to the support. - Some bug can lead to loose your data beside that it a nice debugger if you have a quad with two 24" screen. Zend has the monopole over PHP debugger and does behave has any monopolistic organisation, the management feel untouchable. If Zend studio has so much bug, it is because Zend is directed by an inefficient management team. Don't support this team, don't promote or use their product and teach people evry alternative until they change their behavior. Zend will not desapear but theire management will be fired and, i hope, the new team will be lead by a serious player. Fight for Zend Studio to become the KillerApp it could and should be.

Why do they use these ugly graphics in the menus!; why do they work on such an inefficient desktop environment?; why aren't the most common functions designed to be easy and common sense? Why do they postion it as a professional tool? - Maybe because it does really a lot. So much that it looses efficiency and productivity. Quite expensive, too.

I initially had problems figuring out how to load the server up and get it installed and finally figured out that there were two files to download. Anyway, I also had a spate of problems with the menus not working properly after a while of using it.. But, now that I've got the server installed for a while, that problem doesn't appear anymore for whatever reason (I've also uninstalled & re-installed the client several times when I was trying to figure out how to get the server installed). Anyway, after I figured out the odd "debug.php" that needed to be in my Apaches' document root, I was good to go. So far I'm very pleased, and if it doesn't work out between now and when the temp license expires, I'll move over to using Eclipse with looks really nice also, but the debugger isn't nearly as nice as Zend's. I'll keep my fingers cross that this thing continues behaving... YMMV.

It has pretty nice features, and if it becomes stable I might rethink a purchase, though the price is still a bit steep IMHO. Drop the price by $50 - $100 and I won't even hesitate (though it still needs to get stable). I'd also like to be able to get it to see files in other projects, so I can include files with ease from other projects.

There is so much GODDAM EYE CANDY in the stupid help, and it renders so poorly under Safari, that it is essentially useless. My guess is that they don't test it on anything But Micro$oft Internot Exploder.</p><br> <p>This review is probably more negative than it normally would be, but I have just WASTED THREE HOURS trying to figure out how to debug forms effectively. I can't even get their help system to work, and their website was useless, being written by marketing folks, rather than as a reference.</p><br> <p>Since their help system must be carefully installed and runs as its own webserver on some strange port, it would be very nice if they would simply put their entire help system on their site, so occasional users wouldn't have to fart around with the peculiarities of getting it installed "just so".</p><br> <p>Support is very limited. It essentially has a very limited time period for support unless you give them lots more money. That may be acceptible in a product that actually works! They did answer my email rather quickly while my support was in effect, but it has now expired. Sigh.</p><br> <p>For someone who uses it daily, and can take large amounts of time to have it set up properly, it is probably pretty good. But the occasional user -- especially one without access to their own webserver -- it is painful.</p><br> <p>Because I cannot take the huge amounts of time needed to learn this product, I use it sparingly. I mostly use it as a syntax checker, since without being able to debug forms, the debugger part is largely inconsequential to me.</p><br> <p>Unfortunately, as best I can tell, this is the only show in town if you want a PHP debugger. It should stop trying to be so many things, and simply concentrate on ease-of-use for debugging. And for heaven's sake -- make the help system a self-contained HTML tree that can be used locally! (It only works properly when running as its own webserver on a machine running the Zend server -- which most commercial PHP sites won't let you do.)</p><br> <p>To sumarize, this product tries to do too much, and ends up ignoring some fundamental user needs in the process.</p>

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />Zend Studio is a fantastic program. It is a bit slow on the Mac, and the authors could do a few minor things to make it much better. The interface is very un-Mac-like, but that is mostly because the menu bar is still attached to the application window. Anyone can tweak one of the plist files within the installed application package to change this, but Zend should do this for us instead. It keeps track of all functions in PHP language and in your project, so you have easy access to all your functions. Zend Studio is very useful for learning PHP, because you can take an application like eZpublish or PHP-Nuke and browse the source code very easily. I haven't used the CVS features. It would be nice if Zend could make the Studio Server components for OS X too!
