If you want to start writing and worry about outlining later, go right ahead: when you are ready to break up your writing into an outline, just drag and drop text. If you would rather develop an outline first, go ahead and create items that represent chapters, scenes, poems, or anything else and then go back and write the text that goes with each.

WriterPad does not try to teach you how to write. There are plenty of other software packages for that. Instead, WriterPad gets out of your way and just lets you write.

Excellent but a little irritating

Pros
I love how it can organize my writing. It has a simple interface, and it's quick to load.
Cons
I miss the ability to delete entire words by holding ctrl + backspace.
Summary
It's a wonderful organizing tool for writers. I could have one file of short articles on a single topic and easily access every one of them on the left tree instead of scrolling down numerous pages, or opening numerous files from a directory. Also, if I wanted to brainstorm on topics first and flesh out the details later, I can do that kind of outlining on the left tree. I love the simple interface, it's not distracting, and it also loads a lot faster than Word. However it's a little irritating to not be able to quickly delete entire words by holding the ctrl key. It's something I've gotten used to in every other word processing software I've tried that I'm a little surprised I can't do that here. That's the only reason I'm taking down a star. For future versions I hope they can have an optional frame or window where writers can load maybe a picture or a table/graph of what they are writing about. The text frame would scroll as you write, while that "writing prompt" frame stays frozen. It's just something maybe the developers can pick up on. Overall a good program.

Pros
When I outline with Word, I spend the majority of time manipulating the style. With this program, there is no need to worry about the format, just make the sections and subsections, then type in the information. Easy to print or save as rtf or txt.
Cons
As with any program, I could name more features that I wish were included. Since it is a free program though, beggars can't be choosers

Go to the website to get the latest download. There is no date limitation, they are just developing one with more features which *will* cost money.

Pros
Great program. Very useful. Would have rated a 4 or 5 if not for the con below.
Cons
According to the developer, this version expires May 1, 2009. The next version is apparently going to be paid, not free, price unknown. I've been using the 0.9.2 version. This issue is the only con I have for this product.

Pros
Easy to use, but not so clear how to use it at first.
Cons
When I started with the program. Quite a bit of the buttons did not work. That threw me off. Save yourself this aggravation by clicking on the top left button (which looked like a decoration) and it will give you a menu you can work with.
Summary
At first the user might not know what to do because the only visible buttons appear to be the editing buttons, but the text boxes and other buttons would not work until you create a new project. There is where the trick comes: you need to do that by clicking on the very top left button, which gives you a menu. Then you will be able to type text on the right side. The left side is like a tree of the texts you have typed. You could have nodes with more texts. It would be a single click on the item on the left to see it on the right one. The program would be useful for taking notes. There is no button to paste onto another program just into another place of the text you are working with. That is, within the program itself. You could use the program for say a diary, but I do not know how many vertical tabs (or nodes) the program would be able to handle. The program does not have a help file yet. The program is in beta mode.<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on Jan 24, 2009<p/>The left side has the list with sublists. The rigth side contains the text you type. You can select text on the right side, do control c to copy it to the clipboard and paste it onto another document such as MS Word. The program would be useful when you need to copy texts you have saved previously for repetitive use.

Pros
Allows multiple sections in a single document; you can keep entire project in one doc. Interface is smooth, intuitive, Easy to use. It's the only program I've found to allow a section sidebar that's fully accessible as part of a single document.
Cons
No documentation available yet.
Summary
As a writer, I've found this to be a lifesaver. Not fancy, but well thought out and extremely useful.
Needs a little work, but I like it.

Pros
The page layouts with the outline navigation is very useful. It saves me quite a bit of time when searching though and editing large documents.
Cons
A few major issues...<p>1: It has it's own file type. You can't import from other word processors.<p>Solution: You can copy the text and paste to another program.<p>2: The formating options are very limited.<p>Solution: None...<p> <p>3: No built in spell checker.<p>Solution: There are many spell checking programs out there, I don't know how well they work, but it's a start.
