The spread of wide-screen monitors has prompted renewed interest in programs that manage open windows on the desktop. WinSplit Revolution is just such a program. It is freeware that lets users quickly snap windows into a variety of sizes and positions using hotkeys or a tiny number pad-like "virtual numpad." While it is great for wide-screen LCDs, it works on any monitor.

WinSplit Revolution's installer lets us choose between regular and portable installation options. We chose the regular option, which lets you run the program at startup. The portable version can be installed on a USB drive and removed cleanly. WinSplit opened with its tiny, translucent number pad interface with eight directional arrows around a central button. We started with the arrow pointing to the upper-right corner of the desktop. Clicking it reduced the size of the top open window and moved it to that corner. Clicking the next button clockwise moved the window to the right-hand side of the screen, reducing it to a tall and narrow format. We followed the arrows around the number pad, and our window moved around the desktop. Clicking the central button maximized our window. We could still see the semi-opaque number pad, but it did not obscure much of the view. During the setup, the program noted a hotkey conflict that we had to resolve to use all of WinSplit's hot keys, duplicating the number pad's functions. Right-clicking the program's system tray icon lets us access and quickly edit the hotkey settings. The Layout settings included a small desktop version for configuring the size and placement of windows. The tabbed Options dialog lets us choose a language, import, and export settings, configure the virtual number pad, enable the Drag'N'Go feature, and other settings.

With a little tinkering, it is possible to set up WinSplit Revolution to quickly move windows all over the desktop to preselected positions with a few keystrokes or mouse clicks. The web-based Help file also explains how it's done well.

Since its last update, WinSplit Revolution has gained renewed attention, although newer tools like Microsoft PowerToys' FancyZones have introduced notable competition in the desktop window management space. FancyZones, part of the PowerToys suite, offers extensive customization options for window layouts, allowing users to create and save complex, multi-zone setups for productivity workflows. Unlike WinSplit Revolution, FancyZones integrates seamlessly into modern Windows 10 and 11 operating systems and takes advantage of their native APIs for smoother performance and enhanced compatibility.

A comparison between the two highlights important differences: FancyZones' drag-and-drop interface provides an intuitive user experience, making it more accessible to non-technical users. In contrast, WinSplit Revolution relies heavily on keyboard shortcuts and manual setup, which may appeal more to power users seeking precise control. Furthermore, FancyZones offers dynamic snapping zones that automatically adjust to different monitor resolutions and screen sizes, a feature missing in WinSplit Revolution's relatively static layout configuration.

Another key advantage of FancyZones is its active development and frequent updates, which ensure compatibility with evolving system requirements and add new features. Conversely, WinSplit Revolution, though still functional, has not received updates in recent years, limiting its appeal to users on newer systems. However, its lightweight design and portable installation option remain attractive for those with legacy hardware or specific needs that FancyZones might overcomplicate.

Bottom Line

In conclusion, while WinSplit Revolution still provides robust functionality for managing desktop windows, users seeking more modern and versatile features should consider alternatives like FancyZones. Both tools cater to different user preferences, with WinSplit's simplicity and power-user focus contrasting FancyZones' modern design and enhanced usability. For those exploring productivity tools, the choice depends largely on their operating system, preferred interface, and specific window management needs.
