Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard for Mac

Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard (VMPK) serves as an efficient MIDI events generator and receiver, effectively designed for use on Mac and other operating systems. This utility allows musicians to play MIDI notes using either their computer keyboard or mouse, which is especially beneficial for composers who may not have access to traditional MIDI instruments. VMPK does not generate sound by itself; instead, it interfaces with both hardware and software MIDI synthesizers, and can also display MIDI notes from external instruments or MIDI file players when connected to its input port.

The software is equipped with a modern graphical user interface based on the Qt5 framework, which enhances its performance and user experience. Users can customize their alphanumeric keyboard mapping and preserve their configurations in XML files. Furthermore, VMPK supports sending program changes and MIDI controllers to synthesizers and accommodates various keyboard layouts, such as Spanish, German, and French. As an open-source project, it is under continuous development, with an active TODO file that outlines potential upcoming features.
