Vimeo is a video hosting and sharing site. Users can upload high-definition video that plays in a gorgeous wide-screen player with minimalist controls. One thing that sets it apart from other services is that it was one of the first sites to offer HD video. It also gives video creators the option to let registered Vimeo users download the original file to their hard drive for offline viewing.

Vimeo is also a social network, with a friends and subscription service, along with a way to both rate and share videos. This information goes into a new feed that you can monitor, helping you discover new and interesting videos that your Vimeo friends are enjoying.

In late 2008 Vimeo launched its long-awaited Plus service, which costs about $60 per year. The upgrade removes the site's advertisements, and jumps up the number of HD videos users can upload, along with their weekly upload cap. The service also recently rolled out a really cool new update to its content channel pages. Channel owners can now design their video pages with one of 10 new themes, and pick from three different layouts. The overall look is sleek and sexy without taking away from the site's simplicity.

Slow, slow, slow, glitches that they can't fix.

Pros
You can replace a file with a new file while keeping the same link.
Cons
Uploading a file is very spotty, and very slow. What I mean by spotty is some browsers are able to upload and others have a hard time. Safari seems to act buggy. Firefox works, sometimes. It's not reliable, uploading a file, and there are a lot of complaints about this. What I mean by slow is the upload speed is slow and the encoding speed is horrendous. Upload an HD file and Vimeo will encode it and have it available MANY TIMES slower than the same file on YouTube. YouTube is very fast compared to Vimeo. Vimeo still can't get their iOS app to do what it's designed to do - show me stats. Every time I try to view stats of my own videos on my iPhone, I get a "WHOOPS" error message.
Summary
Paying Vimeo for PLUS membership makes me feel like a sucker. As soon as YouTube allows me to replace a file, I'll quit Vimeo (or if I find another video service).
Lots of nice features but not ready for prime-time yet

Pros
The service has a nice user interface, allows uploads of files up to 5 GB per week, has a lot of different privacy options, is very customizable, the video playback quality seems very good and you can allow others to download your videos.
Cons
Unfortunately Vimeo seems to be not quite ready for prime-time yet though. That is most obvious when you see the many posts that users make daily in their help forum to get upload issues resolved. You immediately get a lot of cute friendly comments from the vimeo staff but not necessarily help. I got the impression that nice kids run the company. It took them 3 days though to tell me that their technology can't handle uploads of files over 2 GB with Internet Explorer (YouTube handles that fine, Vimeo told me to install Chrome or Safari). The technical support staff should be aware of their limitations with the most used browser out there even if they don't have the technology yet to support it.
Summary
This could be a very good video sharing alternative to YouTube at some time in the future if they manage to smooth some technical issues out. Right now I don't think they are quite there yet.They do have a good refund policy though if you run into issues (but of course you don't get the time back that you invested).

See above. I had no problems uploading and sharing an HD video. Your relatives and friends do not need a Vimeo account to view your videos (just a URL and Password for private videos).
Cons
None so far.

They had a technical problem serving videos for 3 days in a row, causeing my site to look horrible. When I went to their forum and posted a polite complaint, they immediately deleted my account along with all my videos.
Summary
This is a comapny that advertises itself as a family safe video site. So the assumption that they are a bunch of uptight mormons is not so out of place. They are a new company with an unclear business plan. You may place all your videos there just to find out that theyve gone out of business 3 months later or that they want you to pay for their services. Being small and novice also means that they have serious technical problems every other day. Being so uptight, if you complain they will delete your account.
