unRAR is a simple utility that unpacks RAR archives under Mac OS X. unRAR lists for 99 cents. Released by the originators of the RAR format, unRAR is available from the App Store and many Web sites. It installs easily.

Using unRAR is simple: drag a RAR archive over the unRAR icon. Tell the utility where to extract the files to, and let it run. unRAR supports password-protected RAR archives and will prompt for the password if applicable. You can drag and drop multiple RAR files and have them processed in a batch if you wish. unRAR does not create RAR archives, it simply extracts files from them. In testing we had no issue with any files being extracted, although a corrupted file or RAR archive caused errors with no real attempt to recover the contents.

As an extract-only utility, unRAR does what it is supposed to. However, there are other archive tools available that support RAR files (both extracting and creating) that are free or the same prices with more features, so we have to wonder why anyone would pay for unRAR. Having said that, it functions well and simply, and perhaps that's good enough for many users.

New unrar version, for real (the old 3.5b5 installer had an old version of unrar).
