Update your Umax scanner software for use with PowerLook, Mirage, and Gemini models.
This is the latest version of the Magicscan software for use with Umax scanners. This software supports only the following models: PowerLook, PowerLook II, PowerLook III, PowerLook 2000, PowerLook 3000, Mirage II, Mirage IIse, Mirage D-16L, and Gemini D-16.
Old, software is buggy but this scanner software works fine on a Mac 8550 running 8.6 system software
Cons
Slow at DPI above 300 but works. When downloading the .sea from cnet you might get an error message that the file is corrupt...it isn't ....once in the older system environment ot unpacks and installs just fine. Just be aware of what scanner you are trying to use it with and read the list at the top of the page.

Summary
I've tried everything to get my Umax 2100XL Scanner to work since I bought it and nothing. I wasted $1500 on a total POS and the customer support is even worse than the sloppy brown stuff afforementioned. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING UMAX!
Poor and confusing support

Pros
Magicscan 4.5 is a good program, which I have used at various times.
Cons
Magicscan 4.5 does appear not to have been updated by Umax since 2001. This is rather not very good considering the fact that it was introduced for the high end Umax scanners, and it is also used by a majority of the other Umax scanners. Being able to download it is another story in itself. Be aware that it is made available for download in different types of formats. So be sure to download the right one from the right site. I tried most sites, and finally decided to download from the USA site of Umax.com. It was downloaded as mscan45.exe in an application file format of 28.2 MB size. The Umax UK site is very slow indeed as I tried it well over 6 times with my high speed DSL, and it only could connect at half of a normal dial-up speed. I will stay away from it. The Cnet Download site which is also my most favorite site, has it listed as mscan45.HQX. It was in HQX file format of 26.7 MB. Unless you have an installed program that can unravel an HQX file format, I will stay away from downloading it in that format too.

When I buy a product, I expect that I can download a driver for free from the company. I am not going to pay $30 for it. You can keep your scanner. No thanks, UMAX.
Don't buy UMAX Products.

Umax's site flat out sucks. I called them since I could not download it off their site. The woman siad "try downloading it at night or in evening." I needed the scanner software for WORK! I tole her this and she offered to send me the software on CD for $17.95. Ya, right! I should be able to download it off Umax's site for free DURING THE DAY! I'm tired of the "our servers are way busy" excuse. UPGRADE! DUH!

Wish I had something new to say about the Umax software. Not only did the old NT (v4.1) drivers totally screw my machine (windows just kept rebooting) but I'm unable to connect to download the update. Don't buy Umax scanners.
No OS X scanner drivers

So far, I've tried to download MagicScan 4.5 from 3 different Mac stations using Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer, and every time the download froze & failed at about 26.7MB. I went to the UMAX site and found they only offered v4.3, not v4.5 as at download.com!?
