TotalFinder for Mac offers a number of powerful upgrades over the default tools found in OS X Finder. While the file browsing experience on a Mac is good, TotalFinder adds tools that many users have been requesting for years, all natively laid over the existing Finder tools so you don't need to use a separate app. It just runs in the background when installed.

After installing TotalFinder, it will replace the Finder icon in your Dock whenever you open it, so you automatically have access to these tools. You can turn it off at any time by closing the taskbar icon, but it runs without prompting. The most visible change is the addition of tabbed browsing of your files. At any time, you can open a new tab within Finder instead of having to manually open a new folder or lose your place in your current window. You can also use a dual pane mode, organize your folders and files in more intuitive ways (as they are on a Windows machine), and you can see your system files, which is missing in OS X. The interface is smooth, fast, and feels built-in. Everything looks and feels the same as OSX's finder, but it runs with these added tools and you can choose to use them or not as you please.

I've been using TotalFinder for two years now and it has become an essential part of OS X for me. The developer has been good about keeping the app up to date with each new incarnation of the Mac OS and it has worked well for me from Snow Leopard through Mountain Lion. One of the first things I do when upgrading my OS is to make sure that I reinstall TotalFinder. I have had it crash on rare occasions, such as with file transfers across wonky networks. It then it kicks you back out to the regular Finder (ick). Not a big deal. I dragged its icon to the top of my Finder Windows, as a shortcut on those rare occaisions, and it relaunches instantly. This really ought to be built in to the OS. Until then, there is TotaFinder.

This app is phenomenal. I use it at home and at work. The feature that most impresses me is a feature that revolutionised web browsers 5 years ago: tabbed browsing. The tabbed finder windows are probably my favourite feature. They behave just like browser tabs, so utilising them is very easily intuited. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Cons
Very rarely on the spectrum of sometimes, the app can get buggy, and requires a Finder relaunch. Consistent updates seem to address these issues right away.

Lots of options for tweaking your Finder. The tabbed Finder windows alone is enough to make this a great addition.
Cons
I've had the app crash on rare occasions in complicated network settings. Its a little less snappy than the native Finder. but this is imperceptible on fast systems.
Summary
I've been waiting for Apple to create tabbed Finder windows ever since the concept was introduced in web browsers. This application fulfills this need nicely. It also has very predictable behavior, e.g. you can drag the tabs to reorder them, and you can drag tabs from one window to another. With dozens of additional little tweaks and features this application was named appropriately. This application is still being actively developed which is nice because updates and bug fixes come out fairly regularly. It looks like the upcoming Lion release will be a challenge with lots of bugs to iron out, but the developer is actively working on these according to his website.

Multiple windows useful, has already sped up my searches and navigations significantly. Simple and easy so far to use, have not got to grips with advanced features yet but this should make the application even more powerful

Not been using it for long enough, just takes some getting use to initially after more use it should come more natural

Display multiple Finder windows as tabs in a single window. The behavior of tabs is just like you'd expect. Drag a file's icon over a tab to activate it, and drop it in the new location. A dozen ways to tweak the behavior of Finder windows further.
Cons
Switching tabs is not instantaneous. It takes about a 1/10th of a sec. on my MacPro.

A very nice way to clean up Finder window clutter. Apple should learn from these guys.

Twice the system crashed -- you know, when the screen grays out and a message comes up to restart. I am sure you will appreciate that that is pretty rare for a Mac. Also the system ran extremely sluggishly with TotalFinder installed.

After I uninstalled it, system performance returned and I have had no further crashes. Have you had any experiences or reports like this? Any sugggestions as to what to so? It is a shame because it has such great features. I hope the developer fixes it.

Same finder interface. Easy to use. Easy to understand. The keyboard shortcuts to reveal the finder tabs is great, no more clicking the finder icons on the dock.
Cons
It crashed only twice in the last month, but restored quickly and nicely. ( I know the developer is fixing and improving it all the time ).

TotalFinder is an add-on which gets loaded into the Finder when you launch TotalFinder.app. It does not modify your Finder files on the disk. It only changes the current instance of Finder running in memory when you launch TotalFinder, which is itself a standalone application. When TotalFinder is running, by default the Finder's Dock icon is replaced with one that has a tab on it. This options keeps the original Finder icon instead. During long file operations, you can show a mini progress bar just below the Finder's dock icon with this option enabled. TotalFinder makes it really easy to capture a variety of path formats for a selected object. Right-click on any file or folder, select Copy Path, and select the path format you'd like copied to the clipboard. Although you can always use the keyboard shortcuts to cut, copy, or paste an object with TotalFinder installed, this menu option offers a button for each edit operation in the contextual menu. Instead of opening into its own window, new tabs will open among the tabs of the last active window.
