SurplusMeter--formerly known as NetTracker--keeps a close eye on your bandwidth use. This utility lets you set a bandwidth limit, a start day of the month, and a connection type (such as PPP Modem or Network Card).

SurplusMeter also calculates a daily allowance and reconfigures that depending on how much you've actually used for the month. The interface is simple and uncluttered, but it also lacks the alarms and graphs found in similar Windows apps. Progress bars help track the days left in the month, the download megabyte count, and the total downloaded and uploaded, and you can easily make manual changes. SurplusMeter should appeal to any users suffering under bandwidth caps, or who just want to know how much they're downloading and uploading.

Summary
The only data that you see is the mathematic calculations when you change the "download limit" and then it populates various "daily allowance" fields and such... but it never tells you how much you've actually used. I've used this product for nearly two months, and there's no data. Complete waste of time.

Doesn't work despite the claim that it works on new macs. I finally deleted the old copies and downloaded new ones. Once it opened there was No active monitoring anywhere of anything on my new Macbook..

Gives useful stats about your usage, easy to install and it works on a Mac!!

The only thing I don't like is the inability to have the window open over other windows even when not the active app. Activity monitor and Itunes have this feature

I use Airport for my broadband connection and networking to my other Macs and a PC, it would be handy if the program could discriminate between internet traffic and network traffic. I've only used it for a week but so far it works unobtrusively in the background does not noticeably affect speed.
Works well, but charge me $30 +/- & give me what I need

Does what it says it will do & does it well. Easy to set up. Clearly tells you how much broadband is used.

Summary
Surplus Meter let me know how much broadband usage my Mac was eating up, but not why and how. Mac OS X 10.6+ users need to know that because Snow Leopard refreshes everything but your breath. My Verizon Broadband usage increased an estimated 4X after I plugged it into my new MacBook Pro. The developer of this free (donation requested) program should use it to market a full scale meter, with usage by app & IP address with download-able tracking. In the absence of Apple creating a software switch for OS X 10.6+ when users are on metered Broadband, you need this program. Unfortunately, you also need, at the least, a program like Little Snitch, plus a download-able tracking program. A great opportunity for an enterprising developer. Meanwhile, Surplus Meter fills only part of the bill, but it certainly helps.

SurplusMeter runs invisibly in the background most of the time, but can present its interface on demand. SurplusMeter is open-source, and is released under the GNU General Public Licence.
