• Too much crash

  Pros

  unfortunatly, this software work so bad, I don't know if it's my x64 system or the product is very instable. Based on other reviewers, download it and see by your self.

  After trying to catalog 1 TB hard disk, the app crash. I try to do the same thing after fresh reboot, same thing, I can't even kill the process.

  This has been a fundamental tool for more than 10 years, saving many hours of searching for valuable key files as needles in an every growing haystack of more than 50,000 files. The advantages of efficient file indexing by a program under owner control are hard to overemphasize. This program is orders of magnitude faster, more powerful, and more reliable than those included with Microsoft Windows Operating System programs. The size of Supercat (<4 MB as it functions in Program Files) is laudable. Reservations about the program that long for improvement are a more effective, and/or better explained, file naming rule set. For a program that has the goal of facile finding and organization of electronic files, the naming of the files by the owner should be a strong virtue. Although there is control of file naming, I always have to inspect carefully (and usually change) the name suggested by Supercat for the name of newly created catalogs. Catalog explorer is useful in showing many columns of key information about the catalog entries, and is quickly sorted by date to allow my most common use for Supercat; that use is to make sure that I have the most recent version of files being edited by multiple team members. This function alone makes the purchase of Supercat compelling. Without Supercat in use, many hours are wasted by editing "old versions" of files, especially large complex documents. After I find the hits for a search, I wish there were an additional feature (that really should be added). That feature would be the ability to sort the catalog (in Catalog Explorer mode) by the disc unique identifier (the Serial Number column). That would make the control of catalog items even more efficient. Inspection of the Supercat File Catalog by a file manager (my favorite is Total Commander) does allow another useful means of reviewing, organizing, renaming (for consistency), deleting duplicates without making an error, and additional sorting methods. However, the disc serial numbers are not available in file managers. This Serial column is surely an appreciated feature of Supercat. If only the function, click on file column to sort by that column, were added to the Supercat Catalog Explorer display window, this tool would be more valuable. Running the catalog takes only seconds for flash drives, even full 16 GB, but 1TB discs take a few minutes to catalog. Thus I run Supercat manually as needed (usually each week for frequently used files and the server RAID), with smaller drives run every day when in active use. Supercat also offers a scheduler that allows indexing at night, which is convenient for single computer users and for relatively static computer situations. With more than 6 computers and multiple users, management by operators seems more assuring. Supercat is a program that uses the considerable power and speed of ever evolving Central Processor Units to manage what is otherwise a mundane and time expensive task. Supercat thus is among those software tools that is on my short list for installation on all computers that I use.

  SuperCat can scan in all the files on a CD in 10 seconds. Amazingly fast. Searching the database for a file is also very fast. (If you want a more complicated search using regular expressions, you can manually search all the *.idx text files using any program you like.) CD scan times for other programs I tried: <p> <p>SuperCat 0:10 (10 seconds) <p>CD Bank Cataloguer - 0:25 <p>Argentum MyFiles - 1:05 <p>CDVista - 1:40 <p>ADC - 3:00 <p>CD Bank Cataloguer - 4:10 <p>Ruby - 5:25 (however search was very fast) <p>MCatalouger - 14:00 (estimated) <p>CD Catalog Expert - show and cumersome <p>CD Storage Master - too slow to even consider

  Cons

  Can't do Regular Expression searches, but you can use another program to search the text *.idx files manually if you want fancy rather than fast. SuperCat incorporates two search features in place of wildcards: "Filename begins with" and "Refine".

  Seems to be oriented to data, weak on music or photo, but not removable media. Finds duplicates and has zip extract.

  Cons

  No cover print, no loan, no location. Has scheduler, but not sure why you would use that without backup. Too awkward to scan lots of disks. It seems to be somewhere between an indexer and a search function. Not strong on a catalog or library function.

  SuperCat is super fast. I indexed a 100Gb of data on my (200Gb) HD in less than one minute. One minute! Then the files were instantly available through a dynamic preview where I could further move, copy, or export them to other media or into a wide variety of categorized lists. Amazing.

  I've used this program since its early days and it's never let me down yet. Dead easy to install, run and use and will find errant files for you in seconds. Definite must for those with either very large drives, those who write tons of documents and those who burn tons of CDs!! Best one around in my view :-))
