  Pros

  A lightweight program that is simple and to the point in what it does in examining the true bitrate of an audio file you own. If you only want to know the current bitrate and need no further analysis options or audio editing, this is for you.

  Cons

  No options other than to add an mp3, or look for an update. It cannot tell you the source or how anyone recorded the files to cd. Some very old albums or poor recordings on a cd, then converted to mp3 at 320kbps might also have a lower bitrate on Spek than you would expect. Variable bitrate mp3's (VBR) may also not give consistent output to what is listed in my summary below, but will still give an idea of current quality.

  Summary

  After adding an MP3 file to Spek, if it's true bitrate is 64 kbps, the spectrum showing won't go above 11kHz. This is the cut-off. MP3 Bitrate 128 kbps = Cut-off at 16 kHz. MP3 Bitrate 192 kbps = Cut-off at 19 kHz. MP3 Bitrate 320 kbps = Cut-off at 20 kHz. M4A file Bitrate 500 kbps = Cut-off at 22 kHz. FLAC file, Lossless quality, Bitrate 1000 kbps or higher = Graph will be drawn continuously, no cut-off.

  Cute logo. No experience required to use this.

  Cons

  Very limited user defined perameters. Doesn't support live line level feeds.

  Summary

  Check for windows32 downloader trojan. Use Spybot to find and remove.
