SpaceSuit is an app that lets you select pictures to use for different desktops. This was a feature supported by OS X Leopard, but later versions of Mac OS X have removed this customization capability. SpaceSuit restores that option, allowing you to have a different background image for each desktop. SpaceSuit was not available in the App Store for this review, but we downloaded it from several sites on the Web.

Using SpaceSuit you can set a new desktop wallpaper by simply dragging any image over the program icon, which immediately sets the wallpaper to that image. To remove a wallpaper, simply click on the SpaceSuit icon to bring up a menu, which also lets you change the screen resolution, rename desktops, or change the wallpaper. The animations SpaceSuit uses when changes are made are cool.

SpaceSuit has a simple purpose, but one that those who like using different desktops will really appreciate. SpaceSuit has a clean interface and gives you back some of the customization options that Mac OS X users have lost lately. In our testing, the program worked perfectly.

Pros
Very easy to install, change settings, and use. The interface is simply the right-click menu of the dock icon; there is no preferences window to find. Add images by moving to the desired space then dragging the desired image file over the SpaceSuit dock icon. With a different desktop image for each Space, now it becomes much easier to keep track of which space you are in, and to give a different meaning or functional role to each space. I would not be able to use Mac workspaces in any organized way without this feature.
Cons
Startup seems slower than I would expect. I wish there were more options available - for example, disabling the Growl notifications would be a nice option...

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />I don't know why Apple hasn't implemented this little feature, so kudos to someone for finally putting one together that works. Something tells me Snow Leopard might find this capability. My unsolicited suggestions: *Create a menu bar accessible drop-down that can more or less replace the Apple/Spaces one that includes the preferences only accessible from the dock item now. By the way, I had no idea they were there--which is why I suggest the menu bar item. I had no idea I could rename each individual space. *On that same note, allow for the ''hiding'' of the dock icon--basically, like some other utilities, allow for menu bar + dock, menu bar only, and dock only. *Perhaps allow for the space title to appear on each space/desktop or next to the menu bar item if you decide to create it. *Allow for patterns in addition to images--this of course means you will have to add the ability to repeat the pattern along with the stretch to fill and other ''fitting'' items. Look forward to adding this to my little list of ''absolute must have'' free utilites for the Mac.
