Editors’ Review
SoundCloud for iPhone enables you to listen to the music and audio streaming platform's free indie music, podcasts, and audiobooks on your iOS device.
Pros
120 million+ user-uploaded songs: There's so much to listen to on SoundCloud across all genres -- from hip hop, electronic, and rock to classical and jazz -- uploaded by independent creators like garage bands, underground rappers, and bedroom DJs.
Podcasts and audiobooks: Not in the mood for a song? Check out a music, comedy, or serial podcast or an engrossing audiobook.
Favorite, add to playlists, or share with friends: Enjoy what you're listening to? Tap the heart to favorite, the share button to message to friends or post to social media, or the menu button to add to a new or existing playlist.
Radio station: If you like a song, then tap the menu button and then the Start station button to launch an endless radio playlist, full of similar tracks. Great discovery: There are so many ways to discover gems within SoundCloud's 120+ million tracks. The Homepage surfaces the hottest tracks by categories: Featured (new, now, next), Next Wave (burgeoning international music scenes, divided by country), Fresh Pressed (the newest releases), Charts: New & hot (the latest and greatest), and Charts: Top 50 (most played tracks of the week). There, you'll also find playlists organized by moods, such as Chill, Party, Relax, Study, Workout, and Sleep curated by the SoundCloud community. You can also tap the search button on the bottom rail to search for artists, music, and audio.
Try before you buy: Before purchasing a SoundCloud Go plan for $5.99 per month, which unlocks offline listening and removes ads, you can try the plan out for free for seven days. You can also try out the more premium SoundCloud Go+ for an entire month, getting access to millions of additional songs, including more major mainstream artist tracks, and enjoy offline listening and an ad-free experience before having to pay $12.99 per month.
Cons
Upgrade mandatory to listen to many major artists: When we looked for major artists such as Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, and Kendrick Lamar, we noticed that we could only listen to previews of tracks. You'll have to upgrade to SoundCloud Go+ for $12.99 per month to enjoy complete tracks from many major artists.
Too expensive: Spotify and Apple Music only cost $9.99 per month for all-access subscriptions as opposed to SoundCloud's $12.99.
Bottom Line
SoundCloud is great for discovering and listening to indie creators, but if you're looking to satisfy your mainstream pop, rock, or electronic music needs, then you're better off on Spotify or Apple Music.
