Editors’ Review
Karl Fairburne returns in Sniper Elite 5, trading the sun-drenched vistas of Italy for the fortified coasts of 1944 France. As an elite marksman working with the French Resistance, you are tasked with dismantling Operation Kraken, a secret Nazi scheme that could turn the tide of the war.
Sniper Elite 5 is a game that masterfully blends tactical stealth with its signature long-range shooting. By utilizing photogrammetry, the environments feel more grounded and authentic than ever, offering players a playground of verticality and choice that rewards patience and careful planning over mindless aggression.
Refined mechanics
Sniper Elite 5’s core gunplay remains the gold standard for the genre. The new workbench system is a standout addition, allowing for deep customization of scopes, stocks, and ammunition types. Whether you prefer a silent carbine for close-range infiltration or a high-velocity rifle for extreme distances, the freedom to tailor your loadout ensures that no two players will approach a mission the same way.
However, while the technical sniping is nearly flawless, the enemy AI can occasionally feel inconsistent. During my playthrough, soldiers would sometimes exhibit superhuman awareness, spotting me through dense foliage, while at other times they remained oblivious to a teammate being downed just a few feet away. This unpredictability can lead to frustrating moments where a perfectly planned stealth run is ruined by a psychic guard.
The maps are significantly more expansive, offering multiple infiltration and extraction points that increase replayability. Despite this scale, the narrative feels somewhat thin, serving mostly as a vehicle to move you from one stunning location to the next. Furthermore, while the traversal has been improved with ziplines and climbing, the character movement can still feel a bit clunky and stiff.
Pros
- Highly detailed maps using photogrammetry
- Deep weapon customization via workbenches
- Thrilling new Invasion Mode PvP mechanics
- Satisfyingly visceral enhanced X-ray kill cam
Cons
- Inconsistent enemy AI behavior
Bottom Line
Sniping experience
Sniper Elite 5 is an easy recommendation for fans of the series, offering the most polished version of its trademark X-ray kill cam to date. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel and suffers from some repetitive mission structures and clunky movement, the addition of the Invasion Mode adds a thrilling layer of tension. It is a robust, satisfying tactical shooter that excels exactly where it counts.
