• Could not get it to work

  I am not a beginner (I have taught IT courses at University level), but after 4 hours of struggling with documentation that did not not seem to bear any relationship to the product I gave up.

  Summary

  What more can I say? It is very difficult to evaluate something when you can't get past logging in! It did not seem to like working with Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome at all, leaving no option but IE, which I dislike intensely. I tried to point it at downloaded log files on the local machine, but it did not appear to recognise the output from an Apache server. May work for full-time professionals but not for me!<br /><br /><span class='notifyMsg'> Updated </span>on May 16, 2009<p/>In addition, when I uninstalled it, it left a clutter of data and configuration files scattered around my file system, and the instructions on how to remove them in the final dialogue box finished halfway through a sentence without actually getting the the bit about removing them.

• New Silverlight charts and Spider detection are great.

  Pros

  Love the email reports. I can schedule then daily/weekly/etc. and they just show up. The "active" charts are intuitive. This release has "spider" identification so you can pull search engine hits out of your numbers to see "real" visitors.

  Cons

  I have heard that even more features are coming but I do not know what they are. The free version only handles one domain, but the paid version are not that expensive at all.

  Summary

  Solid product. Nice to have an option from an independent maker (NOT Google or MS) that works.

  Pros

  SmarterStats is an excellent web analytics tool. With features like data mining and cutom reports, I can find the specific information I need without having to search through mounds of data. Installation was a breeze, no problems with Windows XP. Good job SmarterTools, keep up the good work!

  It didn't work, even on a 30k Apache log file. Serious waste of time. Program claims to be working, but no statistics generated from an obviously good log file.

  ItÂ’s just ridiculous! There is not way the expect there customers to go through all that just to preview their software. You can give it a try but try not to pull out you hair. I usually donÂ’t like giving discouraging review but in this case I made an exception. They should reconsider the method of implementation.

  It is easy to install and activate (8MB not 35MB). I like the very polished, full-featured web-based interface. It comes with its own web server by default, or takes 5 minutes to setup as an IIS virtual folder. Web hoster can install this then create user accounts for web masters, but the free version only allows one site. For my other site I had to get Mach5 which is OK but more bare-bones (no time zone setting, no IIS log files, local app viewer but no HTML reports, must refresh manually).

• Great Blurb - Lousy Product

  First you download an 8MB starter This then starts a downloader that downloads in excess of another 20MB The installation program takes absolutely ages to install and makes numerous unwarrented xhanges to the computer including administrative changes by adding another User. At the end of installation is a 15MB Program all for downloading in excess of 28MB. Next comes starting the prog - you have to log on that you use the program - its fair that the company want you to register the use of their program - but the way this is done makes me feel that this is spyware of the highest order. Once registered - I enter the provided code - and it hangs - I loose control of my previously very stable computer, so I reboot and give one more try Again it hangs the computer - so I have to reboot - I DO NOT TRY THIS AGAIN, but next time I access the inyernate, I cant transfer data normally - in other words internet explorer does not work - I cannot check for emaols in outlook So I do a system restore on completion System restore says it Cannot restore I try winrescue - and it successfully restores the registry Then I have to go into Users in the control panel and delete the extra user the proggy made - because winrescue didnt restore old user status (not complaining about that) It seems this proggy is wanting to continually access to their servers. Consider this: All you want to do is analize your weblog - all the information required is in these logs, what the hell does this have with their servers. I would be very cagey about privacy issues here. SPARTERSTATS DOES NOT DESERVE TIME OF DAY - I WOULD LIKE TO BILL THEM FOR MY WASTED TIME ON A PRODUCT THAT QUITE CLEARLY CANNOT DO WHAT IS STATED - Steer well clear of this or you only have yourself to blame.
