Although it hasn't exactly exploded into the mainstream music-listening population at large, the music-sharing application Simplify Media has a growing network of fans. When you install it, you must choose synchronization with with either Winamp or iTunes playlists, although you can change your preferred program after installation.

After setup and a restart of your music player, you'll see a "Simplify Media" selection in your left-hand navigation. Expand it, and you can browse all of the music available from you and your friends. A separately running Simplify Media application accessible via the Windows taskbar lets you add other friends with Simplify Media accounts and customize the program settings.

Claims of resource hogging and installation headaches are somewhat valid. Installing Simplify Media on Windows will likely require Apple Bonjour. It's included in the Simplify Media installation, but the slow download and subsequent install grated the nerves. Running Simplify Media, Winamp, and Simplify Media Peer--the process that streams media from your friends or remote computers--together uses more than a fair chunk of RAM.

Make no mistake with the minor quibbles: Simplify Media is an excellent and simple method of sharing music collections with friends or yourself in remote locations. We would like to see future versions become even more stable, as well as adding compatibility with other jukebox players.

There are times where it can take some time for you to get to listen to your music.
Summary
Good. Very good overall. But now currently (6/10/2011) Simplify Media is down. Been down for some unknown reason/s, so far. Hope it will be running back up soon.

...with This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com. Have been giving Simplify Media pretty much since it first came out. It's now wonder I hardly ever launch it. Nice concept, clunky execution; The latest versionf (2.5.0.1519) Introduces a new bug on top of the continuation of the old CPU Hog bug that it has had since day 1; Now when I launch, it pretty much recognizes most of my itunes library (well, it recognized 5800 of 8000 songs), BUT now the new bug is that it continuously cycles with a "Reading library file" message and progress bar 99% of the time it is on, and uses 67% of the CPU on a QUAD Intel iMac; WOW, what a resource hog. I will give this product One last chance (next update after this one" before I abandon it; At this time I cannot recommend this application to any of my friends, and I am on the verge of advocating against this app. C'Mon guys, after approx 2 years of development, it still acts this way? Good Luck, and try again. I am going to downgrade, and wait 1 more time.

I liked what I read in the email from CNET Downloads Dispatch for Mac,

but after I downloaded something that only came up as "mac" and tried to install it, it was archived not installed. I'm hoping they'll fix it soon. Maybe I should rename to "xyz.dmg"?

Adding extension .dmg allowed me to install, but the SimplifyMedia.app brings up a Setup Wizard which never terminates... Updated on May 6, 2009(Tiger 10.4.11 on mac mini) Updated on May 6, 2009(Tiger 10.4.11 on mac mini PPC) Updated on May 6, 2009(... never terminates) both on mac mini PPC running Tiger 10.4.11 and on MacBook Intel with Leopard 10.5.6 (where I didn't want it anyway.)

Pros
I installed the client on my G5 Dual 2.0 PPC and on both iphones I have and it plays anything that is not DRM from my 16,000 plus library on E or G3. The quality is very good for a live stream.
Cons
This is more a thing to be aware of. In a very large library, it takes about 30 minutes for all the playlists to populate to your iphone. Once there it was able to stream hour long mixes with no problem
Summary
Setting up other steamer or file sharing programs has always been a problem on my network. I have a complicated home network with a switch then 2 routers so my multiline VoIP will work correctly. This has always been a problem with an application that requires port forwarding or VPN. No problems with this one.This is truly one of those Killer apps that make having an iphone a joy.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com. I've been using Simplify Media to listen to my home MP3 library at work, and it's wonderful. My library is quite large, and I was stretching the limits of the beta, but the developers quickly identified and addressed my issue in the subsequent release. I've found it to be stable and not resource-hungry...plus, it's free! Very cool!
