Great and easy to use

But it really saved me when I needed to sculpt but couldn't afford zbrush. Look up the work that people have done with Sculptris and you'll be amazed!

- Easy UI (user interface) enables learning of complete program via trial and error in a less than an hour rendering virtually anything you may be able to sculpt with clay instantly with professional quality. Results are great the first time you create. Texture/Materials library is expandable with .png files. Lighting is applied automatically. The program is Free!
- Cons
- Undo and other commands are hidden under Options>Tablet navigation and may be overlooked initially. Quick Help suggestions are vague and do not cover where to find or how to use various commands, just cover some shortcut keys mainly. - The program could use a bit of tweaking but for the price and the ease of use it is a must for rapid sculptures and professional results 1st time out!

- Extremely easy to use, supports user created sculpting 'brushes' as well as painting using both materials and textures. The forums have wonderful textures/materials/brushes from other users available for free too!

- Purchased by Pixologic (makers of a very similar commercial product called zBrush, similar functionality), the author has likewise been employed by Pixologic so there are likely to be no further free versions of this incredibly intuitive software.
- Summary
- One of the best free programs I have ever seen to simulate working with clay in a 3D modeling environment in terms of simplicity and functionality, there are some minor limitations that I discovered however, Sculptris does not work well with 'lathe' turned models, or models with non-manifold structure, additionally it only supports importing and exporting in the somewhat industry standard .obj format, additionally having it's own proprietary format as well. The program can be easily installed and uninstalled using the free program ZipInstaller from NirSoft (also available through this site). There are some incredible works of art in the forum galleries both in the Sculptris section of the Pixologic forums and in the old forums which are still up and running despite Sculptris being purchased by Pixologic. Sculptris features subdivision functions as well as polygon reduction tools to aid the user in managing the number of vertices/faces on their model. There is a utility for use with Sculptris to aid in producing materials for it called MaCrea (short for Material Creator) that has been provided by a Sculptris user and is available in the forums on the original Sculptris website as well as the forums on the Pixologic site. All that said the only way you can really get a feel for just how incredible Sculptris is is to actually use it.

- Wouldn't run on my laptop due to insufficient specs, which I couldn't find any mention of in the 'minimum requirements' - but it's fine on my desktop. The interface doesn't tell you that the left and right mouse buttons do different things.
- Summary
- A 3rd 'Con' is that, although I now have an icon on my desktop, I can find no way of making it launch the program - meaning I have to remember where it actually is (not in my 'programs' folder, for some reason), navigate to it, and start it manually. The bottom line? A wonderfully unique program that only misses out on 5 stars because of the 'Cons' I have alreadymentioned

- I have been searching for well over 4 years for a program like this. The closest I came was a program called "SharpConstruct", which I just could not get to work. It is my understanding that that program is now incorporated into Blendar. I Was overwhelmed to say the least to have stumbled onto this program by accident on a forum that I belong to. It is a very direct approach and the feeling of working with clay, There is a great forum, which one should join, with lots of information and problem solving. Also, some wonderful sharing of images created. Such talent. I am learning all the time. This program appears to be way ahead of its time and the creator, Dr. Pettersson, is to be complimented on his creation. I speak here as an artist and as an artist, I appreciate what he has developed. Give Sculptris a try and have fun. Have patience with learning the program, learn and have fun. No, no, I do not work for the publisher, if that's what your thinking. I just love the program and have created sculptures that have surprised me. I will leave the tech comment stuff to those who work in that environment. Mine is as an artist who has found a program that is very satisfiying. Well, thats it folks. Have a nice day.
