SciMark Drives for Mac is a basic diagnostic tool that can measure the performance of drives on the operating system in order to see how fast they can perform at single and multithread requests. To run this software you need to have Mac OS X 10.8 installed on a machine with at least 4GB of memory.

SciMark Drives for Mac comes with a Readme file that offers some basic information about the application. To initiate the system tests, you just click on the file labeled "scimark_drives_macosx," which opens the OS X terminal where the application runs diagnostics and outputs the results in the terminal screen. The application performed adequately for us, but may be too difficult to understand if you're a novice. Tests were performed and completed under a minute, and the application caused no adverse system events. The application also saved test results in a TXT file under our current user.

SciMark Drives for Mac performs its diagnostic task easily, and will be useful if you want to quickly diagnose drive handling, reading, and writing speeds. Do keep in mind that you need OS X Mountain Lion to successfully run this app.

Developer's Description

Measure performance of drives at the operating system level.

Drive, as an electronic device, or as a combination of mechanics and electronics, its absolute performance is determined by its own processing unit and their mechanical/electronic structures, and therefore more powerful and optimized dedicated processing unit could be a good access to lower CPU load and bring up standalone performance of drives. On the other hand, any a drive has to be connected to a computer system via an adapter and managed by an operating system. As storage and/or a host of a computer system and/or as virtual memory, the overall performance under certain storage controller and operating system is sure to have much influence to wide range of applications, especially to the multi-threaded applications and heavy load requests.

SciMark Drives for Mac OSX is a member of Scimark software. It could be a good tool to make a comparison of performance of harddrives among different operating systems and to understand their differences.
