GREAT SOFTWARE & SUPPORT

Pros
Scans photos right from the photo album and lets you write captions. Scans multiple photos (black&white and color).
Cons
Does not scan negatives.
Summary
I have been using ScanSpeeder for 3 years and always get friendly customer support (thanks Brent - you were very helpful!). There are many nice features I like in this product. I scanned in several boxes of old photos and dozens of photo albums, both balck & white and color. My favorite feature is its ability to scan my photos right from the photo album page. Many of the photos I have are over 40 years old and I wouldn't even try to remove them. The "ink dropper" tool to sample the background color of the photo album worked well for my albums with black backgrounds. I also scanned in some newspaper clippings and other written things in the albums. I tried a few other programs before finding ScanSpeeder and I think this one is the best at finding the photos.

Cons
I have the Canon Lide220 and the Epson v39. For greyscale scanning (e.g., older photos), the software always gives an error message that there is a problem communicating with the scanner, even though it works fine for color scanning. Support is non-existent; no phone number or email address on the website.

Not always the best at finding the edge of the photos. I have to adjust most of them. Lack of finer tweaks such as resolution, etc. Then again, simple isn't always so bad

Pros
* Extremely easy to use - not a lot of reading necessary, 5 min & go * Works perfectly - auto-cropping, everything works marvelously * Beats the heck out of scanning 1 at a time and manually cropping!
Cons
* Can't adjust jpeg compression settings, but definitely learning to accept that, may even like the whole TIFF thing better. What I mean is, I've always done jpeg, especially since "the old days" when storage space was so expensive and connections were so slow. EG: this software will scan tiff, jpeg, or both simultaneously, and at 600 dpi, a 4x6 pic is around 10 mb in tiff, 560k in jpeg. I did both on my first couple of scans and compared each, found effectively no difference. Still on the fence which way want to go, but at least have 'that' option.
Summary
Stop scanning 1 pic at a time and buy it!

auto mode works as advertised and the manual mode is just plain easy if the photos are too close to each other. the easy to use labeling of the photos is cool. And the capture in tiff and Jpg simultaneously is nice feature.
Cons
the manual resizing on the cropping frame is hard to grab the corner handles to adjust the frame size.
