ScanFont converts bitmap images like handwriting or clipart into editable vector fonts. It automatically processes images, traces glyphs, and exports to standard font formats, requiring a FontLab editor for use.
  • Pros

    • Accepts diverse bitmap image inputs (photos, handwriting, clipart).
    • Automates background removal, character separation, and vector tracing.
    • Exports to TrueType, OpenType, and Type 1 font formats.
    • Supports both grayscale and full color image processing.
    • Features direct EPS import and various image filters and transformations.
  • Cons

    • Requires a separate FontLab editor for operation.
    • Functions as a conversion tool, not a full font editor.
    • Limited to bitmap and EPS import, no other vector formats mentioned.
    • Lacks integrated font preview or testing capabilities.
    • Not explicitly designed for batch processing multiple fonts.

Developer’s Description

"Make your own handwriting or dingbats font with ScanFont.
ScanFont takes bitmap images such as photos, scanned handwriting samples, clipart, etc.; removes the background; separates the characters; autotraces the glyphs into vector characters; and exports them into a TrueType, OpenType or Type 1 font where they can be edited by a font editor. ScanFont is a plugin for Fontlab's series of font editors - TypeTool, FontLab Studio, and AsiaFont Studio. Version 5.0 supports grayscale and color, adds direct import of EPS graphics , exports .VFB format fonts, features transformations and filters from Pencil to Gaussian blur.
