Crashed computer twice during installation

Unfortunately, despite me being competent with computers, this program crashed my XP SP2 computer during installation so badly that after an hour I had to unplug it from the wall - Task Manager would not even start nor would the clock even change, I have never encountered this before. Restarting the computer and having done disk checks I thought it must have been a fluke and reran the installation - it did exactly the same thing. Alarming.
