Even if you don't know your longitude from your latitude, QuakeMap makes it easy to plot a course over any terrain in America. Although some mapping jargon is unavoidable, the software does a good job of providing features for amateurs and experts alike. Up-to-date information on earthquakes and landmarks, as well as aerial maps that can be zoomed in on to 1/10th of a mile, all are readily available with a live Internet connection. Simple tools upload and download data from most GPS devices, so you can track your exact location. Visual-routing tools also are available for basic trip planning--just click on your start and stop points and you're presented with distances and exact locations. Although hikers and off-road junkies won't need half of the high-end features, nearly everything but the basics are kept offscreen, making the software a breeze to use.

Developer’s Description

Get up-to-the-minute, detailed earthquake information.

This do-it-all mapping program is for hiking, geocaching and other GPS activities. QuakeMap displays aerial and topographical maps, supports popular Garmin and Magellan receivers, and reads and writes GPX files. Draw your route, print aerial and topographical maps, and see waypoints (including geocaches) on the map. Load track logs from GPS and analyze them. Watch your current position on the map. QuakeMap keeps original data links and allows you to create your own Web links. Earthquake information from USGS also is overlaid on the map. QuakeMap collects data from USGS public sources and shows recent earthquakes on the map, in a table, and in a graph. Photos from a digital camera are automatically related to track points and appear on the map.

Version 3.6 allows you to label photos with text and adds coordinates to EXIF tags. View SmugMug.com galleries along GPS track. Preload along route function improved.
