Pinki is a menu bar item that creates permanent Mac OS X icon thumbnails for image files based on their image content. For example, if you download the images "34-234.jpg", "563-641.jpg", and "moose.png" using your web browser, and the file icons are generic "JPEG" and "PNG" icons, you have three choices if you wish them to have custom thumbnail icons: 1) One at a time, open each image in Preview, use the 'File->Copy' menu, close the image, Get Info on the file in the Finder, highlight its icon in the info box, and use the 'File->Paste' menu. 2) Navigate in a Finder window to the folder where the image file is located, select the 'View -> View Options' menu, then click the box labled 'Show Icon Preview'. (The downfall to this is that each time you open the folder your computer will have to re-read the files and assign custom icons to them, which can take a lot of processor power and memory and can slow even new machines down quite a bit. In addition, when you use the "Show Icon Preview" option, the custom thumbnail icon data isn't actually saved inside of the image file itself - if you were to move the file to a different folder or copy it to a different computer the custom thumbnail will disappear. 3) Simply select (highlight) the three files all at once in the Finder, and select "Create Thumbnail(s)" from the Pinki menu item. Or to make it even simpler, just hit Command-Shift-T on your keyboard after selecting the files.
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
It's excellent. But this functionality really should be built-into the Finder. In fact the Finder or maybe an Apple pref pane should provide users an option to automatically create and display icons for all available image types. I have long requested that Graphic Converter take up the task of filling this need, as Apple doesn't seem interested (could it have to do with potential copyright issues?) But i guess we had to wait for Pinki to come along. Bravo. Long live Pinki!

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Pinki has saved me alot of time. I really appreciate the developer's effort into producing a quality, useful application. It does it's job in an extremely timely manner. I do, however, agree with another comment regarding the menu icon. I would also like to request a feature not available- the ability to either (1.) make the menu icon's menu come up as a right-click action, and the left-click action to be the 'Generate Thumbnails' procedure, or (2.) the ability to use as a finder toolbar item with drag n drop functionality or just click to generate thumbs for the current directory's contents.
Again, thanks for the program and especially it's price.
Doesn't recognize pictures or PDF files anymore

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I found Pinki truly great, until the last update to 1.1.1.
Ever since, whenever I want to create a thumbnail of any picture or PDF file, all I'm getting is the error message telling me I should mark a picture file.
(Using OSX 10.4)
I've tried quitting, deleting all associated files including the plist, to no avail.
Until amended (or availability of the old version) I can't recommend it, although I'd love to. Dear Developer, get this fixed!
Cheers,
Rebecca

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I use this app a lot, and it always works perfectly. It couldn't be easier - select any number of pictures and hit command-shift-t. They all get little icons, just like magic.
My only complaint is I'd like a more attractive icon in my menu bar - not too crazy about the little pig's tail.
Really a useful app - highly recommended.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I can't believe no one has left a wonderful review of this product yet. The last two reviews did not do the product justice. Read them, do they make sense at all? There are drugs for these kinds of problems. I digressâ?¦
This product is an amazing tool. It does exactly what I always wanted in a preview icon tool. I had dowloaded everything under the sun and until Pinki, I was never satisfied with the other tools. Not only does Pinki create previews and save me oodles of time, it does it better than I could have dreamed of and in the form of a Menu Extra. I couldn't be happier. This guy should get the freaking best freeware of the year award. Simple, but elegant. Bravo!
