This oddly named image editor offers a nice set of tools for enhancing photos, although many users might not be able to find them due to the nonintuitive design. Launching Photo Mud brings up an interface featuring a treelike Explorer pane for selecting photos, a large preview window, and a smaller thumbnail view of selected photos. Though the program claims to have a rather extensive set of editing features, we could only locate icons for rotation. However, it wasn't until we double-clicked a photo that we discovered the lion's share of the editing functions, which include a zoom tool, various drawing utensils, and settings for tweaking brightness, contrast, color, saturation, and sharpness. The ability to preview and adjust the program's special effects for embossing, posterizing, and solarizing is a welcome addition. We also liked that Photo Mud lets you create thumbnail pages for the Web, as well as photo mosaics. All told, we think this program makes a fine image editor for more inexperienced users, provided the troublesome design issues don't prematurely frustrate them.
