OnyX (Mavericks) for Mac is a maintenance and optimization software tool created to evaluate the integrity of startup files, but it can do more than checking and verification. As the name implies, it works best with Mac OS X 10.9 or the Mavericks version.

Pros

Enables modifications on Mac OS X elements: OnyX (Mavericks) for Mac does a great job at bringing out the functions you may not know in Mac OS X. You can modify the Dock, QuickTime, Safari, iTunes, Mail, Spotlight, and the Log-in, as well as disable the creation of DS_Store files. You can also specify the format of the images saved during screen captures.

Comprehensive cleaning: The Cleaning function provides a quick way to clean the system and user cache, font cache, browser cache, system logs, automatically saved documents, temporary and recent items, and the Trash.

Automated system tasks: With this software you can automate maintenance, rebuilding, and cleaning tasks. These tasks include the repair of permissions, execution of maintenance scripts, display of folders' contents, cleaning of cache, and the rebuilding of Spotlight and Mail indexes.

Cons

Dangerous for inexperienced users: Given the extent of system modifications it can implement, Onyx is not intended for those who lack the right know-how in changing advanced configurations. There are several warnings in the application, but there is no way to stop unintended changes. OnyX is a tempting tool for those who are trying to become advanced users.

Cannot be password-secured: If it's used on a shared computer and falls in the hands of inexperienced users, it may cause system problems.

1. Easy to understand and follow assuming directions supplied are read 2. Reliable when appropriate version is used for MacOS 3. Keeps maintenance items close at hand and not all have to be used.
Cons
With older version of Mac OS, when Mac wasn't so active, about running application that Apple had not approved of and was not selling to developers with Apple blessing and approval, this application could be updated easily. Now however because Apple has chosen to control application to some degree we much all wait for update versions to post AFTER beta is done. This is NOT developer's fault to the extent Apple is trying to control what is or is not loaded to OS 10.9.x

OYNX for mavericks behaves like previous versions. Still a good utility
Cons
CNET should not wrap add ons or malware type software on downloads. I understand their business model since the downloads are free but CNET should state in bold letters when there are add ons and what they are..
Summary
What I did and will now continue to do is; once I find software I like on CNET I will go to the developers website and download direct. I did this for OYNX and all is a-ok. No add ons.

Onyx is a great utility, and I won't go into its benefits for now...
Cons
Only after installing did I find out that the download also brought along a complete hijacking of the defaults in all three browsers I use: Safari, Chrome & Firefox. My default home pages and search engines were changed to Yahoo, and Amazon and eBay buttons added to my tool bars. CNET, you should be ashamed to allow this. I should note this is the second time that's happened to me, after downloading an update from CNET. It will be the last until this changes.

OryX used to work fine, until the Mavericks update.
Cons
The software installs OK, does the initial HD check OK, then hangs on my MBA running the maintenance. The Activity Monitor shows 121 hangs over the past 10 minutes while OryX was running. Life is too short. I will uninstall it.

Easy to use. Gives warnings on why you may not want to perform some cleaning functions and maintenance. Warns when and why some functions might cause the computer to run slower as, for example, rebuilds caches.
Cons
I've experienced none.
Summary
For a couple of hours I had been trying several tips and techniques to make my Mac run faster. It was constantly running at a minimum of 50% CPU load, was heating up, and the fan was always running at high. None of the suggestions helped and then I found OnyX. After I ran through some of OnyX's cleanup routines and restarted the computer, I have had much better performance. Now I only notice a slight difference in performance during a backup.
The best Mac utility. The same as always.
