• Poor Performance and Horrible Graphical Interface

  Pros

  It will solve Excel passwords of three characters with ease.

  Cons

  The User Interface = horrible. If you have switchable graphics and unplug your computer, you will no longer be able to see the interface--just a blank screen. If you stop and try to change the settings to fast, the screen will lock up and task manager will say its waiting on input from you. The words on the screen are cutoff and short and you can not read the entire field description or update. Also, it will stay on the same percentage complete. I let it run for 22 hours it updated the number of passwords, but the percentage stalled at .0209% because I paused and started it again. Furthermore, i went to do something else on the computer and it froze after the 22 hours and just died on me. Dictionary/Mask attack does not allow you to do a "contains" with a set pattern. I am using an i7 Quadcore processor with 8GB Ram and a Switchable 1GB GPU. According to its own measure it does about 1000 passwords per second, but even this is not easy to read because the GUI is so messed up.

  Summary

  I wish I could get my money back. This was a horrible application to spend my money on in terms of the user interface and I have not been able to benefit at all from the password cracking ability. Unless you are doing small passwords be prepared for this application to take weeks to crack a password where you only know limited data and not sure of the exact size of the password above 5 characters.

  Pros

  1. Quickly finds short passwords, e.g. up to four characters. Five characters took a while, but OK if you don't wish to use your PC for anything else while that's going on. 2. Permits user to save current search upon exit. Resumes when reopened.

  Cons

  1. The Idle / High setting doesn't make any difference to the program's operational speed. It chooses max speed on either setting. 2. Limited usefulness on passwords longer than five characters. 3. Software technicians don't respond to user emails.

  Summary

  The trial download permits three-character password unlock and is very fast. It wasn't until I'd purchased the software that I discovered its limitations. The program runs at max speed regardless of the selected setting - Idle or High. On my PC - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 2.2 GHz, RAM 3 GB - it maxed out the dual core CPU and rendered the PC useless for any other operation while the unlocker was running. (I tried to use other programs (e.g. email) a couple of times and crashed my PC.) Max speed is OK for short passwords, as the process is over quite quickly. However, once you attempt to search for a password over five characters - even five takes a while - you're there for the long haul - days, weeks or months. That would be OK also if the program would allocate some resources to other programs. Alas, it takes the lot. So the only time you could use the program would be overnight and I found that my cooling fans were also maxing out while Unlocker was giving the CPU such a constant flogging. It's fine for a short while, but not hour after hour after day after week, perhaps after month for longer passwords. And what's the use of using short passwords these days, when programs like Office Password Unlocker can crack them in minutes? If you are in the habit of using short passwords, say, up to four characters, this product could be worth the price you'll pay for it. (I paid $42 Australian.) However, if you have longer passwords that you've forgotten, you'll need something far better than Office Password Unlocker. I attempted to get some technical assistance with the Idle / High malfunction (over a period of a week), but my emails were ignored. I'm very disappointed with the product, but can't be bothered activating a PayPal dispute for $42.

• I had my word "password to open" in about 1 minute!!

  Pros

  Trial version was super-quick to dload. Uses almost no space. Sooo easy to execute and understand. It's FREE. Doesn't seem to have a password character length limitation.

  Cons

  So far, no cons. Only used it once to get me out of a bind where I brain-farted and forgot my own "password to open" on an important document.

  Summary

  Dloaded the trial version in about 10 secs. I had no clue what "password to open" I had used for an important MSWord 2002 document (OK, I'm an idiot, but my bad). Ran the TRIAL ver. of program while I read the help file. By the time I closed the help file, the program had cracked the password & provided it. I would say, about 1 minute. Now true, I had only used a simple dictionary word to protect my doc, but the program found it immediately and beat the hell out of: Word Password Recovery trial version. which took approx. 6 hours to crack the password, and then AFTERWARDS informs you that it was successful but ya can't have it until you pay them $29.99. Let's see, is this program worth $29.99 if it took 6 hours to do what Office Password Unlocker did in 1 minute? It was a waste of time and a bogus marketing ploy. Office Password Unlocker was fast and simple to dload, uses almost no memory, has a simple interface, incredibly easy to use/understand, and replaced a few of my grey hairs with my natural color in about 1 minute. Not sure how this program would perform with a more complex password, but it got me out of a bind super-fast...and that's what I was looking to do. Two thumbs way up!!
