NotifyBuddy - AMOLED Notification Light, by XanderApps, recreates a hardware notification LED for modern Android smartphones that lack a physical indicator. The app pulses a small portion of AMOLED or OLED screens to show alerts without waking the device or relying on Always-On Display. It offers per-app color assignment, adjustable animation timing, missed call and charging indicators, and scheduled downtime. NotifyBuddy is aimed at owners of newer Android phones who want a low-power, display-based visual alert.

Top Recommended Alternative

NotifyBuddy simulates a hardware LED by lighting specific pixels on AMOLED and OLED displays, creating a pulsing notification indicator while the rest of the screen remains dark. The approach shows pending alerts without a full screen wake or continuous display mode. The app also offers distinct indicators for charging and missed calls, so the virtual light communicates several common device states at a glance.

What does NotifyBuddy do?

How much can you customize the virtual LED?

Customization covers color, timing, and placement: the app supports per-app color assignment, editable animation duration, and blink frequency. Positioning and icon selection let users place the LED at precise screen coordinates, though size adjustment requires Premium. Controls include per-app color mapping, animation length, and coordinate placement. These settings let users tune how and where alerts appear on a given panel.

Does NotifyBuddy drain battery or risk burn-in?

The app targets AMOLED efficiency by lighting only the pixels needed for the virtual indicator, which reduces energy compared with a full-screen notification or Always-On Display. It includes burn-in protection that periodically shifts the LED position to reduce static pixel stress. Some users have reported increased idle battery drain despite the optimization. The developer does not recommend using the app on LCD devices because the entire backlight must illuminate on those screens.

Is NotifyBuddy straightforward to set up and broadly compatible?

NotifyBuddy requires Android 8.0 or higher and is optimized for AMOLED and OLED panels, with origins on the OnePlus 6T. Proper operation needs disabling Ambient Display, granting Notification Access, and excluding the app from battery optimizations. The app provides downtime scheduling to silence the LED during chosen hours, and the developer maintains community discussion under the XDA handle HarshBoy99 for device-specific guidance.

  • Pros

    • Per-app color assignment for individual notification sources
    • Burn-in protection shifts LED position periodically
    • Optimized for AMOLED, lighting only needed pixels
    • Downtime scheduling silences the LED during set hours
  • Cons

    • Size adjustment requires Premium
    • Needs disabling Ambient Display and granting Notification Access
    • Not recommended for LCD screens due to backlight usage

Bottom Line

Practical choice for AMOLED owners who accept a device-dependent trade-off

NotifyBuddy is a pragmatic option for owners of AMOLED Android phones who want a software substitute for a removed hardware LED. Expect some device-specific setup and occasional troubleshooting, and rely on community channels for fixes on particular models. Consider testing behavior on your handset before long-term use, since operation depends on system settings and the display type.

Developer’s Description

Though this is tested on OP6T, it could be working for most Android Oreo and later phones.

Though this is tested on OP6T, it could be working for most Android Oreo and later phones.

So I was annoyed not having an LED notification light on OnePlus 6T so I tried to make one of my own.

As OP6T has amoled display whenever a desired notification comes the app brings in a black screen with notification LED looking animation.

To use it:

1. Disable Ambient Display and any battery optimisation for the app.

2. Give notification access permission.

3 Select apps you want notifications for, by choosing a color

Note: On successfully selecting a color for an app the text in which the App name is written should change to that color

Thats it.

Additional Features:

1. Change LED animation time.

2. Change LED colours.

3. Change LED position.

4. Notify for missed calls.

5. Change LED size (Premium required!)

6. Add Downtime (Premium required!)

Premium version can be bought within the app to unlock all features!
