The good news is that you can download another good software in case you require sending Newsletter from SharePoint. Check JungleMail SharePoint Newsletter & group email tool

It's 100% SharePoint: So easy to understand, everything is made with lists and lookups. So it's no problem to customize.
Cons
As a next step an API would be nice to have.
