Editors’ Review
Grognards, people who play war games, will quickly recognize this game's emulation of a traditional board-based war game. The units look like the cardboard counters used in war games, and terrain is represented by simple graphics. The turn-based gameplay also is similar.
Unfortunately, Modern Warfare represents an extraordinarily simplistic version of a war game. The board is broken up into grid squares as opposed to the hexagons prevalent in modern war games. The unit types are limited to infantry, motorized infantry, armor, and artillery, and the only stat you'll find for each are hit points. There is nothing to indicate the relative attack potential for each unit.
Terrain affects unit movement, although that also is greatly simplified. As an example, no unit can ford a river. Artillery seems overpowered during gameplay, leaving you to blitz artillery units with every unit available, hoping one makes it through. This game may provide some brief fun for those new to war games, but any experienced grognard will be bored by the simplicity.
