The Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64) installs crucial runtime components of the Visual C++ libraries required to run 64-bit applications developed with Visual C++. It includes libraries such as the C Runtime (CRT), Standard C++, ATL, MFC, OpenMP, and MSDIA, enabling software that depends on these components to function correctly on systems without Visual C++ 2005 installed.

The Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64) supports side-by-side assembly deployment, installing its libraries in the Windows assembly cache (WinSxS folder). This allows multiple versions to coexist, preventing conflicts and enhancing system stability and compatibility across applications. This tool is available for free.

Stability engine for classic Visual C++ applications

The Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64) provides the necessary files for many applications and games built with Visual C++ 2005 to run smoothly on a 64-bit Windows platform. By delivering consistent and updated runtime components, it helps avoid runtime errors caused by missing or incompatible libraries. This makes it a vital installation for users running legacy or specialized software reliant on the Visual C++ 2005 environment.

This redistributable supports a wide range of Windows operating systems by utilizing side-by-side technology, a tool that enables it to coexist seamlessly with other Visual C++ runtime versions without causing conflicts. The installation process is generally simple and quick, often requiring only a system restart to complete. Users should take care to download the correct 64-bit (x64) version to ensure full compatibility with their system architecture and proper functionality.

While the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package is essential for running certain older applications, it represents technology from an earlier development era. Most modern software relies on newer runtime libraries, so this package may lack recent performance improvements and bug fixes. As a result, users generally encounter limited direct benefits unless they specifically need support for legacy applications built with Visual C++ 2005.

  • Pros

    • Essential for running legacy 64-bit Visual C++ 2005 applications
    • Supports side-by-side assembly for multiple library versions
    • Includes comprehensive runtime components CRT, ATL, MFC, OpenMP
    • Simple installation and broad Windows compatibility
  • Cons

    • Limited relevance for modern software development
    • Lacks enhancements found in newer Visual C++ redistributables
    • May cause confusion with multiple redistributable versions installed
    • No wireless or advanced deployment features

Bottom Line

Stable foundation for legacy 64-bit applications

The Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64) provides vital runtime support for 64-bit applications developed with Visual C++ 2005. Its role in maintaining compatibility for older software ensures continued functionality on modern systems. Although its scope is largely confined to legacy support, it remains a stable and necessary component for users dependent on applications built with this framework.

Developer’s Description

Install Visual C++ Libraries runtime components.

The Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64) installs runtime components of Visual C++ Libraries required to run 64-bit applications developed with Visual C++ on a computer that does not have Visual C++ 2005 installed. This package installs runtime components of C Runtime (CRT), Standard C++, ATL, MFC, OpenMP and MSDIA libraries.

For libraries that support side-by-side deployment model (CRT, SCL, ATL, MFC, OpenMP) they are installed into the native assembly cache, also called WinSxS folder, on versions of Windows operating system that support side-by-side assemblies. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.
