When I tried out Mediacentral, I wanted to use it with my old G4 iBook to stream content off of either my iMac's iTunes library or my Linksys N2SLU's firefly media server. No such luck, Mediacentral doesn't support remote libraries. If it did, I would give it at least four stars.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The demo is misleading with the way it loads. after registration (under $30. just held back on pizza for a couple nights) the app loads without the plugin overview... and all iw well. my remote is even supported although a little confusing about some keys being "locked out". I use it every day now. the only time i do not use it, is to watch my video podcasts. for some reason they do not get grouped in a way that is easy to tell which one they are. i still use front row for those... Equinux Please fix? other than that, Great stuff!
I hope ITV will not make this app an orphan...
This is such a disapointing app.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Oh the promise! The promise of a 'proper' 10-foot interface for viewing Media on the Mac. It started out so well, but this product is let down by itself in so many ways:
- 5 minute demo. How on earth am I supposed to determine whether it works properly as a media player in only 5 minutes? Thankfully, it took much less time to discover all the other shortcomings.
- Poor file format support. It promises alot, but sketchy at best. No Matroska support, limited xvid/divx support. This really is the core of the product and it needs alot of work!
- Clunky interface. The web site for this product promises so much in this area, especially with it's typically "Apple" slick graphics-heavy presentation. Unfortunately the actual interface isn't nearly as refined or pretty as the web site suggests. Spinning beach balls, jerky transitions and lack of configurability all let it down.
- Useless sound effects.
- Why do I have to sit through a massive "Equinux" logo every time I fire the thing up? Not only that, only once the logo has finished fading in and fading out does it bother to begin loading all the addon components. Maddening!
The list goes on. There are so many reasons I hate this program, and that really depresses me because OSX is SCREAMING for a good HTPC interface (like XBMC for the Xbox). MediaCentral could easily be this if the developers bothered to stop adding useless features and started polishing the ones they have already done.
Come on guys, give it the love it deserves!
Promise never fufilled

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I have followed the different versions through yet this remains a beta like buggy product with minimal support. Despite my Terratac T2 being listed as being compatible I cannot and working perfectly with EyeTV I cannot tune with Media Central. Australian DTT support seems partial to only some states. The program hangs, spinning beach balls galore and frequently crashes. Its soooo slow. Its just not finished.
A shame as the idea is great. I suspect the final nail will be the likely updating of Front Row when Apple launches ITV in the new year.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This latest update seems to fix the bug I reported earlier, where movies running on my Mac Mini (G4) would skip. They now run very smoothly. I'm glad the developer responded, though they really should review their customer support information: when I first reported the bug, they told me it was because my computer was too slow, and suggested I try running it on a newer system. Pretty dumb suggestion, considering a) the movies run fine when being played by Quicktime, without the Media Central interface; and b) newer machines have Front Row, which, while not a one-for-one replacement of Media Central, makes it doubtful that users would shell out $$ for the marginal feature benefits.
Nevertheless, they did fix it, and now I must say I love this program. It works great, allows me to listen and watch all my libraries, and it really makes the Mini a multimedia machine.

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
When playing slideshows created with iPhoto, the music skips. Add this bug to all the others (skipping video, inconsistent tv playback, etc.), and I'd strongly recommend waiting for the next version before paying. By then, I would have upgraded to an intel mac with front row and the whole thing will be moot.
