• Great starting MSI build tool for programmers

  Pros

  It is well documented -- the quick start guide worked, and since then have been customizing my scripts using the Help file which is thorough, searchable, full of snippets). I haven't had to use the discussion forum yet. Comprehensive.

  Cons

  If you have no programming skills, and a complicated MSI task to deal with, then you may not find any tool you can use. It's not pretty, if I had to market the tool, but I haven't found any real cons.

  Summary

  I've tried and failed with a couple of other MSI technology install builder tools before (Wise for Windows, for example), but I'm in good shape with MakeMSI. If you have a little bit of C (or C++, Java, JavaScript, etc.) skills, then you'll pick MakeMSI up pretty quickly. The guy who created this probably had people like me in mind for the tool The failings of the Microsoft MSI technology are discussed in the MakeMSI documentation, and the developer has workarounds for more of these issues then you can shake a stick at. The MSI technology is ugly, and frustrating in my past experience -- but MakeMSI seems to have smoothed over this.

  Pros

  Much more power than I expected and lots of good quality documentation.

  Cons

  Because it is so powerful, it is very flexible and it takes a while to get everything configured the way you want it - although it does come with about a dozen samples that are a great place to start.
