MakeiPhoneRingtone is a free utility that can convert unprotected AAC files into ringtones for your iPhone. Since the iPhone limits ringtones to 40 seconds or less, however, you will need to first use a separate audio-editing application to shorten most songs to the acceptable length--and, if necessary, use that app or iTunes to convert the song to an AAC file. (If you try to convert a longer file, an error dialog will recommend Fission, from the developers of MakeiPhoneRingtone, but any similar app will work.)

Once you have a file of the appropriate length and format, this utility is extremely simple. Just drag the file onto MakeiPhoneRingtone, and the ringtone will appear in your iTunes under Ringtones, which will then appear on your iPhone after your next sync. This latest version fixes an issue with MakeiPhoneRingtone's Help menu.

Clever little app to convert audio file to a ringtone and load it into iTunes for sync. I like avoiding paying for ringtones and I like being able to select the section of a song for the ringtone.

How much time do you really want to take figuring out how to edit and then load ringtones to your computer? Doesn't take long with this program! Why buy ringtones of songs when you can use the songs you really love and make a cooler one?
Cons
The only con is that the program isn't free.

I'd recommend this to anyone who's got an iPhone and wants to make their own ringtones. Easy one click transfer to iTunes of your homemade tone, then you just add it to your phone with your iTunes account.

i found out how to convert :) if you go to into itunes. preferences, import settings, make it ACC encoder. go to the song youd like and hit shift+click. and then go to acc versionnn. (: then im stumped.. cuz the damn thing didnt. work, lmao.
