  For home movies and short video clips, it's a good package.

  Cons

  Give up on converting movies. You can do it, but it's a huge pain to burn the DVD into a kinoma-friendly format, which then must be converted to Kinoma format for replay on Palm. Then, most Palm devices have a hard time with smooth playback.

  This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.<br />still that the PC offers better results, but this version (3.1.1) is a giant step forward compared to the initial 3.0 release. The videos are better, and playback is smoother. That said, PQDVD/MMPlayer give me 304x192 playback, while the same file size on Kinoma only gives me 240 x 180. Different codecs, both on video and audio, and the issue seems to be on playback, not on encoding, at least on my Clie TH55.

I've spent hours testing this version, and while it yeilds files of equivalent or even smaller size than the alternatives, the playback, even using their $20 "EX" player is, frankly, terrible, when compared head to head with MMPlayer. Unfortunately, so far, I've not been able to get MMPlayer to play the .mp4 files that KP 3.01 puts out. Right now, as a total solution, this is only a "nice start." It's got a ways to go

  This is an excellent piece of software. It's very easy to use, customisable and produces good results, with fluid motion and good quality sound. The default settings are ideal for the four Palm devices I have tried, but these are easily altered to give better quality or smaller file sizes. The beauty of this software is that it can produce movies that will play on almost ANY Palm device ever made (memory permitting... the more the merrier), and sound hardware was weak on older Palms, so don't expect miracles on Palms designed to produce simple beeps. It will even encode audio only, or video without sound if you wish. Of course, there is always a downside to counteract all those good points. In this case, it's the size of the files Kinoma produces. In comparison to newer forms of compression such as MP4, the files are pretty big. Shrinking the resolution, biterate and framerate obviously helps, but this detracts from the overall experience. Unless you have a huge memory card, a two hour,full screen movie with high quality stereo sound isn't going to fit. However, play around with the settings, and you can get quite pleasing results without sacraficing too much. In comparison, programs which use MP4 compression (DivX, Xvid et al) require more powerful processors to decode the video, and even top of the range Palms can struggle with high quality, full screen video. I've found video to be slightly jerky when using other video compression programs. Unless you go to extremes, Kinoma produces very smooth video.It's always a trade off between file size and quality. Despite it's shortcomings, I still use Kinoma on a regular basis. Well worth the money.
